If someone were to ask me about my time in Russia,
I'd say it was amazing.
but on a deeper level...
It was the most beautiful place I've ever been, truly a vibe. The food slapped everytime. I went raving every weekend and was truly living my best life. I got the cleanest I've ever been when I went to the banya and got slapped by some tree branches by a naked woman. It was one of the most chaotically
good times of my life and despite the political situation, the people and culture of Russia will always have my heart. I'm heartbroken that I probably will never be able to go back or use the language that I was fluent in.

Looking back at my time in Russia, especially Moscow, it truly felt like stepping into a vibrant, living story. The city isn't just a collection of landmarks; it's an energy that pulls you in. One of the absolute highlights, which still gives me chills to think about, was finally standing in Red Square. It's more than just a famous plaza; it’s the beating heart of Moscow, surrounded by history and architectural marvels. The moment I first saw St. Basil's Cathedral with its incredible colorful onion domes, it took my breath away. Pictures don't do it justice; the intricate patterns and vibrant hues against the sky felt almost surreal. I spent ages just walking around it, marveling at every detail, imagining all the history those walls have witnessed. It’s a place where you truly feel the weight of centuries. Right there, you're also surrounded by the grandeur of the Kremlin walls and the GUM department store, which is an experience in itself – a palace of commerce! Beyond the postcard views, Moscow offered an unexpected depth. The food scene, as I mentioned, absolutely 'slapped' – from hearty traditional dishes to modern culinary delights, it was a constant discovery. And the nightlife! Raving every weekend wasn't just about the music; it was about connecting with incredible people, experiencing a side of the city that's alive and incredibly welcoming. It truly felt like I was living my best life, fully immersed in the moment. One of the most uniquely Russian experiences, and one I'll never forget, was the banya. If you're ever there, you have to try it. It’s not just a steam bath; it’s a ritual, a social event, and honestly, incredibly cleansing both physically and mentally. Getting 'slapped' by those birch branches, while surprising at first, left me feeling invigorated and unbelievably clean. It’s moments like these that truly define Russian hospitality and culture – a blend of tradition, community, and a touch of chaotic charm. Then there’s St. Petersburg, a city that feels like a European masterpiece painted across the Neva River. Its elegance and imperial grandeur are a beautiful contrast to Moscow's bustling energy. Walking through its streets, you're constantly surrounded by stunning architecture, from the Winter Palace to the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. I was particularly struck by the majestic Smolny Cathedral, its striking blue and white facade standing proudly against the sky. It’s another one of those places that makes you pause and appreciate the sheer artistry and scale of Russian history. What really stayed with me, however, wasn't just the sights but the people. Despite any political narratives, the warmth, resilience, and genuine kindness of the Russians I met truly touched my heart. Every interaction, every shared laugh, added another layer to my appreciation for their culture. It makes me heartbroken to think that returning might not be possible, and that I might not get to use the language I grew to love again. But the memories, the vibrant experiences, and the soul of Russia will forever be a part of me.

why can’t you go back
