What level of ice skating are you?

... Read moreFinding your ice skating level is super helpful for tracking progress, isn't it? Knowing whether you're a 'wall hugger' or already 'faster and crossover forward' gives you a great benchmark. But once you know your level, the next step is often, 'How do I get to the next one?' Especially for beginners, the journey from being 'too scared to enter the ice' or just 'staggering' to confidently gliding can seem daunting. I've been there, and I want to share some practical tips that really helped me bridge those gaps! One of the most fundamental skills to master after moving past the 'wall hugger' stage is the push and glide technique. This is your ticket to actually moving across the ice with some grace. Here’s how I tackled it: First, get comfortable standing without holding onto anything. Bend your knees, keep your back straight, and look forward, not down at your skates. Your arms can be out to the sides for balance. I remember feeling so wobbly at first, but practicing standing still for short bursts really built my core strength and confidence. Don't be afraid to fall; learning how to fall safely (knees bent, fall to the side) is a crucial beginner skill. Now for the push and glide: The Ready Stance: Start with your feet about shoulder-width apart, knees bent, and weight centered. Think of yourself as slightly leaning forward from the ankles. The Push: Pick one foot (let's say your right). Turn your right foot slightly outward, creating a 'V' shape with your feet. Push off the ice with the inside edge of that right foot, directing the push slightly backward and to the side. It’s not just a flat push; you're scooping the ice. The Glide: As you push, your other foot (left) will naturally start to glide forward. Bring your right foot back in line with your left foot, so you're gliding on two feet. Keep those knees bent! Repeat: Once you've glided a bit, shift your weight, and repeat the push with your left foot. It's like walking, but with a longer slide in between. My biggest breakthrough moment came when I focused on really using the edge of my blade for the push, not just flat-footing it. It felt awkward at first, a bit like a penguin waddle, but with practice, it became smoother. This technique is what helps you move from just 'staggering' to actually 'skating but gotta bend my knees more' (as the OCR mentions for Level 6). Once you're comfortable with the basic push and glide, you're well on your way to more advanced skills. You can start practicing gliding on one foot for longer periods, which is essential for turning and building balance. This also sets you up for 'just learned to side and backwards skating' (Level 8) and eventually being 'faster and crossover forward' (Level 9). Simple C-cuts, where you make a semi-circle with one foot, are a great way to generate more speed and start feeling those edges for turning. Don't get discouraged if progress feels slow. Ice skating is a journey! Consistent practice, even short sessions, makes a huge difference. Watching more experienced skaters can also give you ideas for technique. Most importantly, have fun and celebrate every small achievement, whether it's gliding a little further or finally getting that push-off just right!
