... Read moreHey everyone! Drawing my OCs, Zu, Ven, and Stat, in these different goth-inspired fashions was such a blast, and it really got me thinking about the nuances between these awesome styles. When you hear 'goth,' it's easy to picture one thing, but there's a whole spectrum out there, from the classic dark romanticism to the vibrant rebellion of scenecore!
Let's break it down a bit. Traditional goth fashion often leans into a more elegant, melancholic, and sometimes Victorian aesthetic – think velvet, lace, corsets, and lots of black. It's about a sense of drama and introspection.
Then you have Emo fashion, which Zu perfectly embodies with her slightly defiant, moody vibe. Emo often has roots in punk but with a more introspective and emotional edge. It's characterized by skinny jeans, band tees, checkerboard patterns, specific layered hairstyles, and sometimes a softer, more angsty feel. Zu's large eyes and overall posture really capture that introspective yet assertive emo spirit, making her a perfect example of how to make an emo OC truly come alive.
Punk fashion, on the other hand, is all about raw energy, rebellion, and a DIY attitude. Ven, my anthropomorphic cat OC, was a perfect fit for this! His confident wink and pose scream punk's playful anarchy. Think ripped denim, safety pins, studs, leather jackets, band patches, and a general 'don't care' attitude. It's often louder and more overtly rebellious than goth, focusing on an anti-establishment stance.
And then there’s Scenecore, which Stat brings to life with their single eye, horns, and energetic hand gesture. Scenecore is like the colorful, playful cousin of emo and punk. It takes elements from both but amps up the color, often incorporating neon hues, animal prints, huge teased hair, and lots of quirky accessories. It’s an explosion of personality and fun, often associated with a vibrant online culture that emerged post-2000s, building on earlier subcultures and adding its own unique twist to character images.
When I'm designing OCs like these, I always consider not just the outfits but how the character's personality and attitude shine through the clothing. For Zu, it was about her defiant gaze; for Ven, his confident stance; and for Stat, their unique features and energetic pose. It’s about creating a visual story that makes your gothic OCs truly stand out.
If you're looking to create your own goth-style character images or just explore different aesthetics, think about what kind of story you want to tell. Do you want the brooding elegance of traditional goth, the angsty introspection of emo, the defiant energy of punk, or the bright, quirky fun of scenecore? Each subculture offers a rich palette of inspiration. It’s not just about clothes; it’s about a feeling, an attitude, and a community. What's your favorite style to see on OCs?
