Sable Island is a mysterious sand island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in Canada.

This place has been called the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" because more than 350 ships have been wrecked since 1583.

The island is shaped like a crescent moon, about 42 kilometers long, but only 1.5 kilometers at its widest, and importantly - the whole island is almost entirely made up of "sand," which constantly moves and changes shape.

The reason why this place is dangerous to navigation is the intersection of the Gulf Stream and the Labrador Current cold currents.

The result was dense fog, severe storms, and an underwater sandbar that moved throughout, quickly making the nautical map obsolete.

They are believed to be descended from horses that survived the shipwreck or horses seized from the former Acadians.

These horses learn to survive by eating plants on the island, and digging for fresh water from natural pools.

Currently protected by law. Disturbance is strictly prohibited.

🦭 The island is also the largest grey seal breeding site in the world.

And it is inhabited by rare birds like Ipswich Sparrow, which nest on this island alone in the world.

Sable Island is currently under the care of Parks Canada.

It has the status of a national park sanctuary.

There are no permanent residents except officials and researchers.

Visits require strict prior permission to protect vulnerable ecosystems.
