A historic discovery in Britain. 🇬🇧
Scientists found a "sea dragon" fossil some 180 million years old. During the normal drainage of the lake at the Rutland Water Nature Reserve, this 10-meter-long skeleton belongs to Ichthyosaurus, a Jurassic-era marine reptile that resembles a dolphin, and is considered the largest and most complete skeleton ever found in the country.
The fossils were discovered in 2021 by Joe Davis of the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, and the excavations were led by renowned paleontologist Dean Lomax, an international ichthyosaurus expert and co-operator of the documentary Dinosaur Britain.
Ichtiosaurus first appeared about 250 million years ago and became extinct about 90 million years ago. The discovery therefore created not only excitement in science, but also opened a new chapter of history of primitive marine life in England.
