Behind the Trevi Fountain: 1.5 million euros a year for the needy
Every Monday morning, images rarely seen by tourists take place at Trevi Fountain, central Rome.
The watercourse is temporarily closed; the officer steps into a centuries-old marble basin, carefully collecting the coins piled under water, before safely forwarding them to the sorting center.
Each year, there are about 1.5 million euros from this fountain.
And all the money didn't go into the city budget, but was given to Caritas Charities.
Coins from around the world - euros, dollars, yen, pounds - were systematically cleared, separated and exchanged.
Before morphing into food, shopping cards in charity supermarkets, shelters and hardship assistance programs.
Legend says
Throw a coin over your left shoulder with your right hand and you'll be back in Rome.
But in fact,
Those little coins may be becoming someone's meal.
Become a new opportunity on the day when life is stumbling.
A fountain that used to feed the city with watercourses.
