Weak Core? Check This Out.

2024/11/19 Edited to

... Read moreAs a mom, I know firsthand the challenges our bodies face, especially after pregnancy. For years, I just accepted that my persistent back pain and occasional leaking were simply 'part of motherhood.' But then, I started learning about the importance of core strength and how a weak core can be the root of so many issues. It completely changed my perspective, and I want to share what I've learned with you. So, what's the big deal about a strong core versus a weak core? It's more than just aesthetics; it's about how your body functions daily. When your core muscles are weakened, particularly after pregnancy and childbirth, it can lead to a cascade of problems. I remember that 'jelly belly' feeling, like everything was just... loose. My back ached constantly, even from simple tasks like lifting my baby or standing for too long. And yes, those embarrassing leaking issues? Turns out, they were directly linked to my core not providing proper support. A weak core means your deeper core muscles aren't engaging effectively, leaving your spine unsupported and your pelvic floor less stable. On the flip side, a strong core feels like a stable, supportive corset for your entire body. When your core muscles are strengthened, they work together to provide stability for your spine, improve your posture, and enhance your overall balance. For me, once I started focusing on strengthening these muscles with consistent, targeted exercises, I noticed a huge difference. My back pain lessened significantly, and I felt so much more stable and in control of my body. Even movements that used to feel difficult became easier. It’s not about having a six-pack, but about functional strength that supports you in everyday life. How can you tell the difference for yourself? One simple way is to pay attention to your body. Do you often feel unstable? Does your lower back ache? Do you notice a "mom pooch" that doesn't seem to go away, which could be a sign of diastasis recti (abdominal separation)? These are all common indicators of a weak core. Another quick check: lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat. Place your fingers on your hip bones and then move them slightly inward and down. Try to gently draw your belly button towards your spine without tilting your pelvis. Can you feel a gentle tension under your fingers? If not, your deep core might not be engaging properly. Moving towards a strong core isn't about drastic changes, but consistent effort. It's crucial to focus on engaging your deep core muscles, especially your transverse abdominis and pelvic floor. Simple exercises like pelvic tilts, modified planks, and bird-dog can be incredibly effective. Remember to breathe deeply, engaging your core on the exhale. It's a journey, and patience is key. If you're unsure where to start, or if you suspect issues like diastasis recti, consulting a women's health physical therapist can provide tailored guidance. Strengthening these muscles isn't just about feeling better; it's about reclaiming your body and improving your quality of life as a mom. You deserve to feel strong and supported!

This image details Diastasis Recti, explaining what it is, its prevalence in mothers, common causes, and body clues like 'mummy tummy.' It also provides a step-by-step guide on how to self-check for abdominal separation by feeling for a gap above the belly button.
Check if your mom pooch is more than belly fat
Here’s how to self-check for Diastasis Recti (ab separation): Lie on your back, knees bent, and place fingers just above your belly button. Gently lift your head like a crunch and feel for a gap. If it’s more than 2 fingers wide, you may have DR. 👉 This could be the reason behind your mom pooch
