The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden Audiobook Review

I finally decided to listen to The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden three days ago and I finished the audiobook yesterday.

I tried to listen to this audiobook twice, but I wasn’t in the mood for it. Then I tried to listen to this audiobook a third time and I started to get into it. The reason I tried again for the third time with this audiobook is because everyone kept talking about a twist at the end of the book that they were not expecting and I love a good twist that I don’t see coming. That unexpected twist at the end that everyone was talking about is what motivated me to give the audiobook another try.

LETS TALK ABOUT IT!!!!!!

THIS REVIEW IS GOING TO BE ALL OVER THE PLACE

SPOILERS AHEAD*

This book takes place in the past and present. The past being Tom’s POV, and the present being Sydney’s POV.

At first I thought Kevin was Slug because Sydney and Tom described both Kevin and Slug as very tall and skinny. Because I thought Kevin was slug, I also thought that Kevin and Tom orchestrated their first meeting, so that Tom would look like the hero who saved Sydney from Kevin’s advances.

I thought it would have been too obvious for the killer to be Tom or Slug since Freida was making it seem like Tom killed Brandi, and Slug killed Alison. I would have been disappointed if it had been Tom that killed Brandi and Slug that killed Alison because that wouldn’t have been much of a twist.

I also thought Randy was Slug because Sydney said Randy was tall and skinny, and always wore jeans and a shirt, just like Slug did. Then Randy bought an ant farm to keep in the apartment that he and Gretchen shared, so i definitely thought Randy was Slug after he bought an ant farm because Slug also liked ant farms.

Freida basically created two different adult versions (Kevin and Randy) of Slug that had the same characteristics that Slug had. Kevin liked watching girls from their windows just like Slug did. While Randy liked going into woman’s apartments (since he had the key to every apartment in the building because Randy is the super) to do weird things

So Slug would have ended up being just like Kevin and Randy when he became an adult because Slug was like Kevin and Randy when Slug was a teenager.

I don’t know how Sydney didn’t catch onto the fact that she was dating the same guy that Bonnie was dating. Sydney was dating a doctor just like Bonnie was dating a doctor. Sydney was dating a doctor who had commitment issues just like Bonnie mentioned to both Sydney and Gretchen that she was dating a doctor who had commitment issues. Sydney was dating a doctor with commitment issues who was great in bed, just like Bonnie mentioned to Sydney and Gretchen that she was dating a doctor with commitment issues who was great in bed. The similarities were SOOOO OBVIOUS.

Sydney even mentioned how it was possible that the guy Bonnie was dating could have been Tom because Sydney first met Tom, three blocks away from her actual apartment building, and Tom was walking in the opposite direction from Sydney’s apartment building. Tom was in a residential area, on a Tuesday night, when Kevin was trying to hurt Sydney, and Tom saved Sydney from Kevin’s advances. Sydney and Bonnie both live in the same apartment building, and when Sydney got rid of Kevin and walked back to her actual apartment building, Sydney spotted Bonnie sitting on the bench in the hallway, and Bonnie told Sydney that the guy she was went on a date with just walked her back home. SO HOW DID SYDNEY NOT PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER, WHILE SHE WAS DATING TOM.

Also the red flags that Tom had was literally smacking Sydney right in the face. Like Tom was always lying to her and Sydney even caught Tom in his lies and she STILL STAYED WITH HIM.

I was starting to suspect Gretchen when she was trying to stop Sydney from leaving and pressuring Sydney to stay and celebrate her and Randy’s engagement. My first thought was that Gretchen either knew that Randy was the culprit and was protecting him or Gretchen was helping Randy off the girl before Bonnie and then Bonnie.

But when Tom started banging on the door and saying you “better not hurt her daisy” I was like NOOOO FREAKING WAYYY. The thought of Gretchen being daisy didn’t even cross my mind since Tom told Sydney that daisy died when she was a teenager . When Tom told Sydney that daisy died when she was a teenager I assumed that slug killed her.

That twist with Gretchen being Daisy was AMAZINGG. I did not expect it at all.

I can’t believe it was Daisy that killed, tortured, and then mutilated Alison. Alison really loved Daisy and was just trying to protect Daisy from Tom, and was trying to get Daisy to break up with Tom several times for Daisy’s own safety. Not even knowing that it was Tom that she should have been protecting from Daisy. That girl is NUTS. Daisy has been terrorizing Tom for YEARS by killing every woman that he touches.

Daisy also was the one who killed Brandi because Allison told Daisy that she saw Brandi and Tom kissing. Then Daisy killed Alison because while Alison was walking her dog. Alison saw Tom and Slug putting a rug in the trunk of slugs car with Tom’s dad’s body wrapped in the rug. Alison’s dog started wilding out and barking and pulling Alison forward towards the trunk of slugs car. Alison didn’t know why her dog was acting out like that and barking at the trunk and asked Tom and slug what was in their trunk. Slug made up the excuse that it was raw meat that he got from Tom’s house because his family was having a BBQ. Alison bought the lie and told slug and Tom that her dog loves raw meat. Daisy saw Tom kill his dad from the window at the side of Tom’s house. So Daisy also saw everything go down between Alison, Tom, and Slug. So she killed Alison to protect Tom from going to jail because eventually Alison would have put two and two together about what was really in the trunk of slugs car once it would have been apparent that Tom’s dad disappeared. Then Daisy killed Slug to frame him for Alison and Brandi’s murder.

It’s crazy because slug wanted to kill Alison for the same reason that Daisy ended up killing Alison for. Because slug didn’t want to go to jail, so slug was willing to kill Alison even though he had a thing for her just to avoid going to jail. Slug also wanted to kill Daisy because Slug believed that Daisy was going to become a problem because Alison told Daisy that she saw Tom and slug putting a rug inside slugs trunk, and slug didn’t want to go to jail for helping Tom get rid of his dads body.

Daisy is basically obsessed with Tom, she’s more obsessed with him than he is of her. Like yeah Tom was obsessed with Daisy. But not on a “I will kill anyone who tries to date Daisy type of obsessed” like Daisy is. Tom actually said how he knew that he wasn’t good for Daisy before he found out how insane Daisy was.

I feel like Tom was dead wrong for continuing to date and have one night stands with woman knowing what their fate was going to be because of Daisy. I mean yeah Tom tried to take the necessary steps to keep Daisy from finding him over the years. But it’s like dude she finds you every time so why put these woman’s lives in danger like that if you know you’re not gonna turn Daisy into the police.

Anyways the book ended with Tom and Daisy running away together and the police trying to find them. Tom sent Sydney a letter in the mail basically telling her that he took care of Kevin for her (Tom and Daisy killed Kevin), since Kevin kept stalking Syndey and watching her through her window.

Daisy is giving me Love from the show YOU on Netflix vibes. While Tom is giving Dexter vibes. Since it seems like Tom is only going to kill people who deserves it. While Daisy doesn’t care if the person is good or bad.

I feel like Tom was trying to be good and he was self aware, and was being as good as he could be for years. Like after he kept daisy’s secret, when he found out that she killed Brandi, Alison, and Slug. Tom stayed away from daisy after that because he knew she was dangerous. But Daisy kept terrorizing him for years to come after they graduated from high school and didn’t let Tom move on from her. Daisy was not good for tom because she was trying to get Tom to embrace who he was, while Tom was trying to resist who he was.

I do wonder if slug was a psychopath like Daisy and Tom because the way that slug helped Tom get rid of his dad’s body after Tom killed his dad and then the next day at school slug didn’t even seemed fazed by what him and Tom did the day before, and was acting like everything was normal and just another day at school is NOT NORMAL. I do wonder how slug knew how to get rid of a body and was so knowledgeable about cleaning up a crime scene. I also wonder what slugs real name was.

I find it crazy that the one kid in the whole entire school that Mr. Driscoll probably didn’t interrogate (Daisy) was the one that was the culprit the entire time.

What are your thoughts on this book?

... Read moreIf you're anything like me, you've probably seen Freida McFadden's thrillers everywhere, and 'The Boyfriend' was one I absolutely had to dive into, especially as an audiobook. I find thrillers so immersive when I can just listen, and the narration by Victoria Connolly and Robb Moreira truly brought the characters to life for me. Their distinct voices made it easy to follow the dual perspectives and feel the growing tension, which is crucial for a book with so many unexpected turns! Listening to the story unfold, rather than reading, really amplified the suspense, especially during those moments when you're just waiting for the next shoe to drop. It’s perfect for long drives or when you're doing chores and want to be completely absorbed. Speaking of the book's vibe, 'The Boyfriend' firmly plants itself in the psychological thriller genre. It's got all the hallmarks: a seemingly normal situation that slowly unravels into something sinister, characters with hidden depths (or outright secrets!), and those jaw-dropping twists that make you question everything you thought you knew. Freida McFadden is a master at setting up these intricate puzzles, making you second-guess every character's motive. This book is a prime example of why her work is so addictive – she keeps you guessing until the very last page, delivering a truly heart-pounding experience. Even the cover art for 'The Boyfriend' subtly hints at the dark undertones. You know, the one with the crisp white shirt and the blood-stained red tie? It’s so minimalist yet speaks volumes about the professional facade and the violence simmering beneath. It’s brilliant how it sets the stage without giving anything away, perfectly capturing the essence of a domestic thriller gone wrong. It makes you wonder from the start who that tie belongs to and what secrets it holds. For anyone who hasn't picked up 'The Boyfriend' yet, trust me when I say it's a wild ride. Without giving away any spoilers, imagine a story where every relationship feels a little off, every coincidence seems too perfect, and you're constantly trying to figure out who to trust. It's the kind of book that keeps you on the edge of your seat, perfect for those times you want to be completely engrossed. You'll switch between suspicion and sympathy for the characters so many times. If you love a book that genuinely surprises you and leaves you thinking about it long after you've finished, this one is a must-listen (or read!). It definitely lived up to the hype for me, and I can see why everyone talks about Freida McFadden's knack for twists!
