When I first planned my trip to Belgium, everyone talked about Brussels and Bruges, but I found an absolute treasure in Ghent! If you're looking for incredible medieval attractions without the overwhelming crowds, Ghent is your perfect destination. I fell in love with how alive this compact city feels, blending ancient history with vibrant modern life. My top recommendation for any visitor has to be exploring Gravensteen Castle. Standing majestically in the city center, this impressive moated castle truly transported me back in time. Walking along its ancient walls, I got some fantastic panoramic views of Ghent's skyline – it's a must-do for history buffs and photographers alike! You can really feel centuries of stories within its stone. Just a short stroll away, you'll find the breathtaking Saint Bavo Cathedral and the iconic Belfry of Ghent. Stepping inside the cathedral, I was absolutely mesmerized by the sheer artistry, especially the world-renowned Ghent Altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers. It’s truly a masterpiece that you could spend hours admiring. For another incredible perspective of the city, I highly recommend climbing the Belfry. The climb is worth every step for the sweeping views over the historic core, including other Gothic landmarks. But Ghent isn't just about grand buildings; its intricate network of canals and medieval streets is an attraction in itself. I loved wandering aimlessly, discovering charming bridges and hidden courtyards. Taking a boat tour along the Leie and Lieve rivers was a highlight – it gave me a unique insight into how this city flourished through trade and craftsmanship, and seeing the historic facades from the water is just magical. The Graslei and Korenlei quays, lined with picturesque guildhouses, are perfect for a leisurely stroll or grabbing a coffee. For those looking to dive deeper into the city's character, I also suggest checking out the Design Museum Gent or the STAM – Ghent City Museum. They offer a different lens through which to appreciate Ghent's past and present. Planning your visit? I found that Ghent truly rewards slow exploration, so definitely plan at least one full day, though two or three would be even better to soak it all in. The best time to visit, in my experience, is from April to October. The weather is usually mild and pleasant, and the city often comes alive with various festivals and events, making the squares even more vibrant. What’s more, Ghent's location makes it an incredibly easy stop for travelers exploring Flanders. It sits conveniently between Brussels and Bruges, and you can reach it by train in under an hour from both. So, if you're traveling through Belgium, don't miss out on adding this stunning medieval city to your itinerary. You won't regret discovering its charm and countless attractions!
