... Read moreAs a parent member of the ATEP and someone actively engaged with the D75 council, I have witnessed firsthand the positive impact that sensory toys can have for children with disabilities, especially those on the autism spectrum. Sensory toys are designed to provide tactile, auditory, or visual stimulation that helps children develop important cognitive and motor skills while offering calming benefits. Sensory toys often include items such as fidget spinners, textured balls, weighted blankets, and chewable jewelry. These tools assist children in self-regulation, improving focus, and reducing anxiety—key factors in special education environments. Schools that have incorporated sensory toy programs report improvements in classroom behavior and increased engagement from autistic students. Parent involvement through organizations like the ATEP council is crucial because it helps shape educational policies and resource allocation for special education. Being back in school for special education myself, I understand the importance of advocacy and having a voice in the development of programs tailored to the needs of children with disabilities. Furthermore, retail stores like Target often feature specific lines of sensory toys, making them accessible to families seeking supportive tools outside of the school system. Combining these resources with specialized educational programs creates a supportive ecosystem for children to thrive. Overall, sensory toys serve not only as engaging playthings but as essential educational tools that address sensory processing challenges in autistic children. For families and educators, being informed about these resources and actively participating in councils or parent groups ensures that children receive the best possible care and learning environment tailored to their unique needs.
