My skincare is pretty consistent across the board. Not only the routine itself but the type of products that I use.
My Skin Concerns:
*Hyperpigmentation
*Hydration
*Acne
My skincare is curated based on my skin concerns and needs. For me, hydration is a must. Most, if not all, of my skincare products have some type of hydrating element to it.
... Read moreOkay, so I’ve shared a bit about my core morning routine, but there’s one product I absolutely cannot stress enough, especially when it comes to tackling my skin concerns like hyperpigmentation and keeping everything hydrated: sunscreen! It’s truly the MVP, the non-negotiable step that ties everything together and protects all the hard work your other products are doing.
Many people think sunscreen is just for beach days, but trust me, that couldn't be further from the truth. Daily use, even on cloudy days or when you're mostly indoors, is crucial. For someone like me dealing with hyperpigmentation, UV exposure is the biggest culprit for darkening existing spots and triggering new ones. Wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every single morning is the most effective way to prevent this. It’s like putting a protective shield over your skin, allowing your Vitamin C serums and other brightening treatments to actually do their job without constant undoing by the sun.
Choosing the right sunscreen can feel overwhelming, but here's what I've learned: Look for "broad-spectrum" on the label, which means it protects against both UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays). For my combination skin that leans sensitive, I often gravitate towards mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. They sit on top of the skin, creating a physical barrier, and I find them less irritating. However, there are fantastic chemical sunscreens out there too, which tend to be lighter and leave less of a white cast – it really comes down to personal preference and what feels best on your skin. I've found some great vitamin C cream formulas that also incorporate SPF, making that morning step super efficient.
And how do you apply it? This is key! You need to use enough. The general rule of thumb is about a quarter teaspoon for your face alone, or the "two-finger rule" where you squeeze a line of sunscreen down your index and middle finger. It should be the very last step in your skincare routine, right before makeup. If you're going to be outside for extended periods, remember to reapply every two hours. I carry a small stick or powder sunscreen for touch-ups throughout the day.
Another game-changer has been understanding how my hydrating serum and toner work with my sunscreen. A well-hydrated skin barrier, thanks to my hydrating serum, actually functions better as a whole, making it more resilient to environmental stressors, including sun damage. And using a good toner after cleansing preps my skin, ensuring all the subsequent layers, including my sunscreen, absorb and sit beautifully without pilling.
Finally, if you're incorporating a chemical exfoliant into your routine (which can be amazing for texture and hyperpigmentation!), daily sunscreen becomes even more critical. Exfoliants can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so never skip your SPF on exfoliation days – or any day, for that matter! My experience has shown me that consistency with sunscreen is the single most impactful thing I can do for my skin's health and appearance. It's not just about preventing sunburn; it's about safeguarding your skin’s future.
