Creating a model during college can be an exciting and valuable learning experience, especially in product design courses. In the second semester of my college freshman year, I worked on a foam bracket exercise that allowed me to practice precision cutting and sanding techniques. Using yellow 10 lb. foam, I crafted this piece with attention to detail, which not only honed my skills but also deepened my understanding of product design fundamentals. To achieve the desired precision, I utilized various tools including table saws and sanding tables, along with different grits of sanding papers. These techniques are crucial for anyone aspiring to become a product designer, as they ensure that the final model is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional. Furthermore, learning to manipulate materials like foam is essential, as it offers insight into how different materials behave during the design process. This exercise exemplifies the importance of hands-on practice in educational settings, particularly at institutions like the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, where creativity and technical skills intersect.
