First model built my 3D Class✨

2025/4/3 Edited to

... Read moreBuilding my very first 3D foam model for design class at the College for Creative Studies was such an eye-opening experience! I wanted to share a bit more about the process behind creating this geometric piece, especially since I learned so much about asymmetrical balance. It wasn't just about cutting foam; it was about understanding how different rectangular prisms interact to create a visually engaging form, and how to translate a concept into a tangible object. When I first started this project, the idea of asymmetrical balance felt a bit daunting. Unlike symmetrical designs, where everything mirrors itself for a predictable harmony, asymmetrical balance relies on distributing visual weight unevenly but still achieving a sense of equilibrium and interest. For my sculpture, this meant carefully positioning each upright and horizontal rectangular prism on the main rectangular base. I experimented with various sizes and orientations to ensure the L-shaped structure felt dynamic and stable, rather than appearing off-kilter or unstable. The goal was to create tension and movement without losing overall coherence. My initial planning involved a lot of sketching, almost like creating simple wireframes on paper. I spent a good amount of time just drawing out different arrangements of these basic rectangular forms, trying to visualize how they would fit together in three dimensions. This planning stage was absolutely crucial for understanding the negative space and how each element contributed to the overall composition. It really helped me decide on the final L-shaped configuration that you see in the photos, ensuring that even with its asymmetry, there was a clear sense of purpose and design intention. Working with foam was an interesting challenge. It's forgiving enough for a first-timer, allowing for adjustments, but also demands precision for clean lines. I used a hot wire cutter to achieve those sharp, crisp edges on all my rectangular prisms, which is vital for a geometric model. Attaching them securely to the rectangular base was another puzzle. I quickly learned that a strong, quick-drying adhesive and a bit of patience were key to ensuring everything stayed put and maintained that pristine, geometric look. Each piece had to be aligned perfectly to uphold the integrity of the design. One of the biggest takeaways for me from this class at the College for Creative Studies was how much thoughtful planning goes into even a 'simple' sculpture. Even if you're not diving into complex digital software, just sketching out your ideas, considering proportions, and thinking about how light will interact with your geometric forms can profoundly elevate your final piece. This project truly solidified my understanding of how fundamental concepts like asymmetrical balance are applied in practical 3D design. I'm already brainstorming my next foam sculpture, eager to push these ideas further and explore new geometric compositions! If you're considering trying a similar project, my advice is to embrace the iterative process. Don't be afraid to play around with different rectangular prism dimensions and placements. It’s all about trial and error to find that perfect, balanced asymmetry that speaks to you. I'm so proud of this first model and how it taught me the practical application of design principles. It's amazing what you can create with just some foam and a solid understanding of geometry!
