OC Commission!!

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a bit more about the process behind my Kitsune Paladin drawing, especially for those of you interested in character art and bringing your fantasy OCs to life. When I first got this commission request, I was so excited because it was a chance to really dive into something new – a fox-eared character with a warrior spirit! Starting with the Concept: The brief for this Kitsune Paladin was fantastic, even without going into the full backstory. I immediately started thinking about how to blend the elegant, mystical nature of a kitsune with the strong, protective role of a paladin. This meant sketching out various poses, trying to capture both grace and power. I focused on making her feel active and ready for battle, which led to the dynamic pose you see with the hammer. Drawing Fantasy Elements: One of the fun challenges was incorporating the fox ears and tail. For any of you trying to draw animal-human hybrids, my tip is to really study animal anatomy. How do fox ears sit on the head? What's the natural curve of a fox tail? Even though it's fantasy, grounding it in a bit of realism makes the character feel more believable. I also paid close attention to her expression – wanted to show her determination! Capturing Movement in Black-and-White: Working in black-and-white was a deliberate choice for this piece, and it's something I really enjoy. It forces you to think about values, shadows, and light in a different way. To emphasize the powerful swing of her large, ornate hammer, I used plenty of dynamic motion lines. These lines are crucial for conveying energy and impact, making the drawing feel alive even without color. I often sketch these out first in my sketchbook, just like you might see in some of the process shots, figuring out the flow before committing to the final lines. The 'HIYA!' and 'EAT THIS!' speech bubbles were a fun addition to amp up the action! Details Make the Difference: From the intricate details on her armor to the design of the hammer itself, every element contributes to the overall character. Don't be afraid to spend time on the small stuff – it really elevates the piece. I love seeing how these details come together to tell a story about the character, even in a single static image. Why Black-and-White? For me, black-and-white art has a timeless quality. It highlights form and composition, and it can be incredibly dramatic. If you're new to character drawing or looking to refine your skills, trying black-and-white can be a fantastic exercise. It helps you focus on the fundamentals without getting distracted by color theory. I truly had an awesome time bringing this character concept to life.
