How I lowered our grocery bill
Not only has this helped our grocery bill, but I also know what is in our food.
My motto for years now has been “when you know better you do better” so why didn’t I start this sooner?
Honestly I thought it was harder than it is, but also I was lazy. I knew I loved baking, and cooking, but the convenience of premade food made life easier. So what changed? I started homeschooling, once I had my kids 24/7 I noticed what the food was doing to them. Up set stomachs, hyperactivity, headaches, and fatigue are not normal for kids. As an adult I could deal with those things, but I didn’t want them for my kids.
So slowly we started weeding out the artificial dyes, from there I started making sandwich bread, and it just spiraled. Now I make as much as possible from scratch, I am only human so of course we still go out to eat, or grab quick meals sometimes, but we don’t feel the effects like we used too.

Lowering grocery bills can be a transformative journey for families, especially for those conscious of health and budget. One effective strategy is to embrace homemade cooking, where families can craft their favorite foods from scratch, like homemade bagels and sourdough bread. Homemade bagels, for example, not only save money but also allow control over ingredients, making them free from preservatives and artificial additives. Similarly, vanilla simple syrup can be easily made at home and is a versatile sweetener for beverages. Furthermore, discovering recipes for sourdough discard muffins can minimize waste, turning leftover starter into a delicious snack. Using fresh, whole ingredients helps parents address dietary concerns, especially in children who may experience varying reactions to processed foods, such as hyperactivity and stomach issues. By forgoing pre-packaged meals, families can prioritize nutrition without breaking the bank, creating a healthy lifestyle while being budget-conscious. Engaging children in the cooking process also fosters a love for food preparation, equipping them with essential life skills and promoting family bonding over meal creation. In conclusion, adopting a homemade approach can be rewarding, promoting not just savings but also well-being for every family member.
