New Generation of pleco fry 🥰 ( Day 1 )
Today marks the first day of carefully extracting the pleco fry into a separate breeding box. This is to ensure that they do not wander away from the tunnel and die from starvation or risk getting eaten by other bigger fishes in the tank!
This way, it would also be a lot easier and efficient to feed them equally once their yolk sac fully depletes and are ready to eat! Let's hope most of them survives the first night!
While the main focus is on separating pleco fry to ensure their safety and proper feeding, many aquarists also want to know the best way to prepare and cook pleco fish when they reach full size. Although plecos are primarily kept as algae eaters in home aquariums, some people are curious about how fried pleco tastes and how to prepare it safely. From my experience and research, plecos have tough, armor-like scales, which require careful cleaning before cooking, often involving removing the skin to expose the tender flesh. Frying pleco typically involves marinating the cleaned fillets in a seasoning blend, then deep frying until crispy. Aromatics like garlic, chili, and lime can complement the dish well. However, it's important to note that plecos are mainly valued as ornamental fish and tank cleaners, so if you consider cooking them, ensure they come from a clean, pollutant-free environment. Additionally, understanding local regulations about keeping and harvesting pleco fish is essential. In summary, whether you keep pleco fry for breeding or are curious about culinary uses of adult plecos, handling and care are key. For fry, providing a safe, separate space ensures survival; for adults, proper preparation can make fried pleco a unique dish. Sharing these tips helped me connect with both fishkeeping and culinary communities, blending hobbies into enjoyable learning experiences.
