After soaking in all the magic Prague had to offer on my 2024 trip, I felt a pull to explore more of the Czech Republic. Everyone raves about Prague, and rightfully so, but I wondered what other treasures this beautiful country held. That's how I found myself on a train heading to Brno, a city that quickly captured my heart, especially its incredible Old Town Hall Tower. Getting to Brno was surprisingly easy and affordable, much like the rest of my Czech Republic experience. Once there, the Old Town Hall Tower immediately drew my attention. It's not just any tower; it’s a Gothic masterpiece with a fascinating history, and the views from the top? Absolutely breathtaking. The climb up was a winding journey through narrow, ancient stairwells, each step building anticipation. I love getting a bird's-eye view of a new city, and Brno did not disappoint. From the observation deck, a panoramic vista of Brno unfolded before me. I could see countless historic buildings, their red roofs contrasting beautifully with the green parks and bustling streets below. In the distance, the spires of grand churches, like the impressive Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul on Petrov Hill, pierced the sky. It truly felt like stepping back in time, seeing the city laid out like a medieval map. I even spotted what I imagined could be one of Brno's illuminated city squares at night, though I was there during the day, the potential for magic was palpable. Beyond the views, the Old Town Hall itself is full of quirks. Don't miss the famous Brno Dragon (which is actually a crocodile!) hanging in the passage, and the crooked pinnacle on the Gothic portal – a playful protest by the architect against unpaid wages. These little details make the history come alive and are what I truly cherish about exploring European cities. After my tower adventure, I wandered through the vibrant Cabbage Market (Zelný trh) just below the Old Town Hall. It’s a sensory delight, brimming with fresh produce, flowers, and local crafts. It felt so authentic, a true taste of local life, which perfectly complemented my earlier experience in Prague. The friendly stallholders reminded me of the overall warmth and welcoming nature of the Czech people I’d encountered throughout my trip. Just like in Prague, I found that carrying some cash was definitely a good idea here, as many smaller vendors preferred it. Exploring Brno, especially climbing the Old Town Hall Tower, added such a rich layer to my Czech Republic trip. It reinforced that this country is not just about its famous capital, but a tapestry of beautiful, affordable destinations with amazing food and welcoming faces.
