I painted the “oil rig” from rust

Hey everyone! I've been getting a lot of questions about my recent painting of the Rust game's iconic oil rig, especially regarding the medium and the overall aesthetic. While many might associate industrial or 'rusty' visuals with traditional oil painting, I actually opted for acrylics for this piece, and I wanted to share why. Acrylics offer a fantastic advantage with their faster drying time, which is absolutely perfect for capturing those fleeting sunset colors and building up layers quickly. This was crucial for achieving the vibrant pink-orange sky you see in my painting. Plus, I love how versatile they are for creating texture on the canvas – something essential for bringing out the ruggedness of the oil rig itself and the dynamic water reflections. The canvas really does show texture, which adds to the gritty feel of the Rust world. When I decided to tackle the Rust oil rig, I knew I wanted to capture its desolate, yet captivating, beauty at sunset. The game's environment often feels stark and industrial, and portraying it against such a dramatic sky adds a whole new layer of emotion. My process usually starts with gathering a ton of reference images from the game itself – screenshots of the oil rig from various angles, focusing on the intricate structures, the helicopter, and especially how the light hits the water and the rig at dusk. For the large sun reflecting on the water and the vibrant sky, mixing those rich pinks and oranges was a challenge but incredibly rewarding. I started with a thin base layer, gradually blending in darker hues towards the top of the sky and lighter, more reflective tones near the horizon. Capturing that shimmering effect of the sun on the water required careful layering to create depth and movement. I used broader strokes for the initial sky and water, then refined the smaller details on the rig and the distant helicopter with finer brushes. One of the things I really focused on was making the canvas show texture. Even though it's an acrylic painting, I wanted to evoke a sense of weathered metal and the harsh reality of the Rust world. This involved using impasto techniques in certain areas, building up the paint slightly to give a tactile feel to the structure of the rig. It's truly about translating the game's unique atmosphere into a tangible piece of art that you can feel. Don't try to replicate every single pixel; instead, capture the essence. What makes that location iconic to you?
