Helping Neighbors Became My Best Life Hack
I learned this during a really rough time in my twenties: help your neighbors whenever you genuinely can, and don’t ask for anything in return.
Back then I didn’t have much, but I did have time and willing hands. I helped carry groceries, fixed a couple of loose cabinet doors, walked someone's dog when they had surgery—little things, nothing dramatic.
But it shocked me how much came back my way without me ever asking. One neighbor brought over homemade soup every Sunday for months. Another gifted me a microwave when mine died. Once, right before payday, I found a bag of fresh bread and fruit at my door with a note: “Thank you for always helping.”
Even now, when I’m not struggling, I still do it. Not for the freebies—those were just sweet surprises—but because it made my little corner of the world feel like an actual community.
Do you have a “poor person hack” you still swear by today?
