Dumbest Reality Check Ever 😂

At first glance, these images might seem like simple everyday moments. But once the phones are taken out, there’s a stark reminder of how much our lives revolve around these devices. Smartphones are incredibly complex tools—they give us access to nearly all information globally, help us stay connected, and even shape how we experience reality. Removing them from pictures makes the scenes appear oddly empty and disconnected, like something vital is missing. It’s like pointing a camera at a cyclist but editing out the bike, which makes the image confusing or incomplete, as one observer noted. This project made me reflect on how dependent we are on phones to interact with the world. When people are staring into their empty hands or looking down, it’s not just about the absence of an object but the absence of connection that once was. The images also reveal a social commentary: while phones occupy much of our attention, they are integral in how we express ourselves and engage with others. By removing them, the photos expose a ‘disturbing reality check’ about how our devices both connect and isolate us. Personally, this photography inspired me to be more mindful of my phone use. It’s easy to get lost staring at a screen and miss the richness of direct, in-person experiences. Sometimes, putting the phone down uncovers a clearer view of the world and deeper human connections.
