Handmade Floral Keychains! (Real Flowers)
Hey everyone! If you've ever admired those gorgeous keychains with real flowers suspended inside, you're in the right place. I absolutely love making these, and they've become one of my favorite DIY projects. It's truly rewarding to transform delicate blossoms into durable, everyday art. Let me walk you through some tips and tricks I've learned along the way to help you create your own. First off, getting started is easier than you think. You'll need a few key supplies: epoxy resin (two-part, usually a resin and a hardener), silicone keychain molds (you can find these in various shapes like circles, squares, or even letters), dried or pressed flowers, jump rings, and keychains. Safety first remember to work in a well-ventilated area and wear gloves to protect your skin from the resin. Trust me, a little preparation goes a long way! The magic really starts with the flowers. You can use store-bought dried flowers, but I find it much more special to press and dry my own. Pick small, flat flowers or individual petals. Place them between sheets of absorbent paper (like old phone books or special flower pressing paper) and press them under heavy books for a few weeks until they're completely dry. Any moisture left in the flowers will cause them to rot or turn brown in the resin, so patience is key here. Once your flowers are ready, it's time for the resin. Carefully measure and mix your resin and hardener according to the manufacturer's instructions. This is crucial – an improper mix can lead to sticky, uncured keychains. Stir slowly for a few minutes to minimize bubbles, then let it sit for a few more minutes to allow any remaining bubbles to rise. I often use a warm water bath for the resin bottles before mixing to make the resin thinner and reduce bubbles even further. Now for the fun part! Pour a thin layer of mixed resin into your silicone mold. Gently place your dried flowers onto this layer using tweezers, arranging them just how you like. Don't overcrowd them! Less is often more. Once you're happy with the placement, pour another layer of resin over the flowers until the mold is full. If you're working with thicker keychains, you might need to do this in multiple layers, allowing each layer to partially cure before adding the next to prevent the flowers from floating. You can also add a touch of glitter or tiny gold flakes for extra sparkle! After pouring, use a heat gun or a lighter (briefly and carefully!) to pop any surface bubbles. Then, cover your molds to protect them from dust and allow them to cure fully, usually 12-24 hours, depending on your resin and environment. Once completely cured, demold your beautiful creations. You might need to trim any rough edges with a craft knife or sand them gently for a smooth finish. Finally, attach your jump rings and keychains, and voilà ! You have a personalized, handmade floral keychain. They make fantastic gifts and are a lovely way to keep a piece of nature with you always.
