... Read moreCreating a truly memorable Halloween costume is all about the details, and for me, the eyes are always the star. This year, I dove headfirst into a 'Ojitos Mentirosos' clown makeup look, aiming for that haunting 'lying eyes' vibe that's both captivating and a little unsettling. It's more than just drawing on a sad face; it's about conveying a deep, expressive emotion that draws people in.
When I first thought about 'Ojitos Mentirosos' – which translates to 'lying eyes' – I envisioned a clown whose seemingly cheerful exterior hid a world of untold stories, or perhaps a mischievous glint that suggested not everything was as it seemed. For Halloween, this concept is gold! I wanted to go beyond the typical scary clown and create something with a nuanced, almost poetic sadness or deception in the gaze. The OCR scan even picked up on "Happy ex Hal," which I took as a sign to infuse a bit of twisted Halloween cheer into the mix.
Here’s how I approached crafting my 'Ojitos Mentirosos' look:
First, the base. I started with a very pale foundation to give that classic clown-like canvas. Then, contouring became my best friend. Instead of sharp, angular lines, I focused on creating softer, more sunken contours around my cheekbones and temples to add to the melancholic effect. It's all about playing with shadows to subtly alter facial structure.
Now, for the 'lying eyes' themselves. This was the most crucial part. I used a dark, smudgeable eyeliner to define my upper lash line, extending it slightly downwards at the outer corners to give that droopy, sad appearance. Below my lower lash line, I drew a second, slightly curved line, mimicking the shape of a tear duct but extending it outwards to create an exaggerated, almost painted-on eye effect. The space between my natural lower lash line and this drawn line was filled with white face paint to make the eyes appear larger and more doll-like, contrasting beautifully with the dark eyeliner.
To enhance the 'lying' aspect, I added subtle, hand-drawn detailing. Think tiny, almost invisible lines radiating from the inner corners of the drawn white area, suggesting fine cracks or spiderweb patterns. I also used a tiny bit of red face paint to create a slightly irritated or teary-eyed look at the very inner corners, giving the impression of hidden emotion. For the eyelids, I opted for a smoky grey and purple eyeshadow blend, keeping it muted to let the stark white and black of the 'lying eyes' truly pop.
No clown is complete without a mouth, and for my 'Ojitos Mentirosos' clown, I went for a distorted, exaggerated smile that hinted at something sinister beneath. I used a bright red cream paint, drawing the corners of my mouth far beyond my natural lip line, curving them upwards dramatically. Then, I added tiny black stitches at the ends of the smile, making it look almost sewn on – a classic, creepy touch. A stark white highlight in the center of the bottom lip gave it dimension.
Finally, to tie the whole look together for Halloween, I considered accessories. A ruffled collar, perhaps a slightly tattered wig, and even some oversized gloves would complete the transformation. The goal was to create a cohesive character where every element, especially those expressive 'Ojitos Mentirosos,' told a story. It's a fantastic feeling to bring such a detailed vision to life, and I can't wait to see what other haunting looks fellow Lemon8 users create for Halloween 2025!
