happy 24th birthday to me i guess LOL
thank you so much to @Texas Renaissance Festival for having such on-the-ball medical teams, to hanna(h?) the EMS for being so thoughtful and caring, to my dad for carrying me into the wheelchair and then stretcher when i was too feverish to move, and to my mom for buying me such a beautiful new dress to change into 😭🫶🏻 it was a wild birthday weekend to say the least! 😭😂 #ciri #renfaire #horrorstory #storytime #hijabcosplay
Celebrating a birthday at a lively event like the Texas Renaissance Festival can be memorable, but it also comes with unexpected challenges, especially when cosplaying in elaborate costumes. My experience with heat stroke during my Ciri cosplay underscores the importance of listening to your body and prioritizing health over appearances. Heat stroke is a severe condition caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures, leading to the body’s inability to cool down effectively. This is particularly risky when wearing heavy, pleather-based costumes that trap heat and reduce ventilation. In my case, the combination of unusually warm mid-November weather, the dense materials of the Ciri outfit, and physically demanding activities like packing up the campsite contributed to my heat-related illness. Staying hydrated is essential, but even that wasn't enough on this day. Symptoms like excessive sweating, extreme fatigue, and muscle cramps soon worsened, forcing me to seek medical attention from the Renaissance Festival's on-site EMS team. Their immediate response—providing electrolytes, ice packs, and a cooler cotton dress—was lifesaving. This experience reminded me that emergency medical services at large festivals are vital, not just for entertainers but for all attendees. If you plan to participate in cosplay or immersive events, here are some helpful tips: 1. **Choose breathable fabrics:** Opt for lighter materials when possible to allow air circulation. 2. **Know your limits:** Take frequent breaks, especially in direct sunlight, and recognize early signs of heat stress. 3. **Stay hydrated:** Drink water and electrolyte-rich beverages consistently. 4. **Have a backup plan:** Bring an alternative outfit like a lightweight dress or clothing to change into if needed. 5. **Don't hesitate to seek help:** Festival medical teams are there to support you. Promptly addressing symptoms can prevent serious outcomes. My birthday weekend taught me that sometimes, stepping back and caring for your health is the bravest and smartest decision. I’m grateful for the caretakers who helped me and the supportive festival community. With better preparation, I look forward to re-debuting my Ciri cosplay safely in the future.
