dorkiest vest known to man but idc 😛 #altfashion #diy #tour #metal #hijabfashion
Creating and customizing a vest like mine is more than just fashion—it's a storytelling experience. Each patch and pin carries a piece of my history, from high school memories to travels abroad. For instance, the Palestinian flag patch was hand-crafted to express personal identity, while the Girlschool patch, painted by me, honors my favorite all-female metal band that has thrived since 1978. One of the most meaningful additions to my vest is the artwork referencing Eddie Munson's guitar from the hit show Stranger Things. I crafted this myself using red velvet ribbon and silver embroidery thread, incorporating intricate details like strings and frets. Though I was initially hesitant about showcasing the Stranger Things patch openly, placing it upside down on my collar makes it a subtle inside joke for those who notice. Travel souvenirs also play a significant role in my vest's story. The shamrock pin from Ireland was a gift from a camp friend during my Lions Youth Camps & Exchange. It serves as a reminder of the friendships and experiences gained during that trip. Similarly, a racing flag pin commemorates a family friend who loved racing, blending personal connections into my outfit. Safety pins are practical and symbolic here, reflecting my hijabi lifestyle's needs. Though I had intended an edgier look with safety pins adorning the armholes, my frequent need to use them for fastening led to fewer decorations over time. This dynamic element shows how my vest adapts with me. In combining alt fashion, metal culture, and personal expression, this vest is an evolving canvas of my passions. From band logos like KISS and The GazettE to personal faith symbols like the moon and star, every element adds depth and meaning. Crafting and wearing such a piece encourages creativity, connection, and a celebration of individuality within the larger alt community.
