I'm so excited to share more about my acetone vapor smoothing journey! When I first heard about vapor smoothing for 3D prints, I was instantly intrigued. Who wouldn't want to turn those rough, layered prints into something with a perfectly smooth, almost injection-molded look? It's a game-changer for finishing DIY projects, especially if you're like me and want to elevate the quality of your creations. For those curious about how to embark on making an acetone vapor bath, let me walk you through some of the basics I've learned and the steps I'm taking. First and foremost, safety is absolutely paramount when working with acetone. It’s highly flammable and its fumes can be harmful, so always work in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors or near an open window, and wear appropriate safety gear like gloves and eye protection. Here's a simple breakdown of what you'll typically need for an acetone vapor bath for 3D prints: A container: This needs to be airtight and made of a material that won't react with acetone. Glass jars with tight-fitting lids work great, or even metal containers. Make sure it's large enough to comfortably fit your 3D print without touching the sides or bottom. Acetone: The star of the show! Make sure it's pure acetone, not nail polish remover, which often contains other additives. I had acetone on hand, which was a good start for my project. Paper towels or cotton balls: These will be soaked in acetone to create the vapor. A small platform or stand: Your 3D print needs to be elevated so it doesn't sit directly in the liquid acetone. A small metal rack or even some aluminum foil crumpled into a stand can work. Now, for the 'how to do acetone vapor smoothing' part. Once you have your materials, the process involves a few careful steps. First, line the bottom and/or sides of your airtight container with paper towels. You can also use cotton balls. Next, carefully pour a small amount of acetone onto the paper towels, just enough to saturate them without creating a pool of liquid at the bottom. Remember, it's the vapor that does the smoothing, not direct contact with the liquid. Place your 3D print on your elevated platform inside the container. Make sure it’s securely positioned and won't tip over. Then, quickly but carefully seal the container. The acetone vapor will begin to build up inside, gently dissolving the outer layer of your ABS 3D print (this method works best with ABS plastic, which is soluble in acetone). This is where the patience comes in! The smoothing process can take anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours, depending on the size of your print, the ambient temperature, and the concentration of the vapor. You'll want to check on your print periodically – maybe every 15-30 minutes – but avoid opening the container too often, as this lets the vapor escape. You're looking for that glossy, smooth finish. Once you achieve the desired smoothness, carefully remove the print from the container, again in a well-ventilated area, and let it cure and off-gas for at least 24-48 hours. It will be slightly soft to the touch initially, but will harden as the acetone fully evaporates. I'm starting with a small test piece for my project to get a feel for the timing and conditions. It's an exciting learning curve, and I'm hoping to achieve some fantastic results. Getting that mirror-like finish without sanding is truly appealing! Keep in mind that different plastics react differently; this technique is primarily for ABS. If you're working with other materials like PLA, you'd need different solvents or methods.
