The truth about interviewing in biotech as a nurse

Here’s how I prepped to land my first biotech role as a nurse practitioner.

Interviews are a different ball game in biotech and the non-clinical world! If you’ve made it past the application phase and landed your first interview, congrats! This is a huge accomplishment.

I was so excited to get past that phase for the first time and wanted to make sure I made a lasting impression at my interview. So here’s what worked for me:

-Dedicate prep time! I took time to prep my answers to questions at every stage of the interview process. I wrote everything out and then refined it to make my answers concise.

-Prep and elevator pitch! Honestly I didn’t even know this was a thing before interviewing my first time in biotech. But this is what I prepped to answer the question “tell me about yourself.” I prepped a 30-60 second pitch that incorporated: 1. Intro or summary statement of who I am 2. Highlight experience in reverse chronological order (add metrics here if you can) 3. Tie it all together with a sentence on why you think you’d be successful in the role.

- Prep stories in the format of STAR: Situation, Task, Assessment, Reaction. This is essentially a tool kit for you during interviews. I prepped 10-15 stories in this format and then practiced using them to answer a variety of different interview questions.

-practice, practice, practice!! I had my husband role play the interview with me and it was so helpful! It helped me get all my nerves out too.

As the interview approached, I made sure to remind myself that they were interviewing me for a reason. They already like me on paper so now it’s just time to let my personality shine and charm! Confidence brought me a really long way so if I were to do it again, I’d repeat these steps so that I’d walk into my interview cool, calm & prepped to impress.
