Apps every new nurse practitioner needs

Here’s the apps that nurse practitioners should never try to live without anymore! No need to gate keep let’s get into it:

1. OpenEvidence- evidence based clinical info but the AI version! Literally struck gold when I found out about this app. Everything is sourced too which gives it extra credibility. I can ask a clinical question and it provides summarized data with receipts. Call that a win!

2. Epocrates- A MUST for all prescribers. This app gives you drug references, pill identifiers and checks drug interactions. This made prescribing so easy and honestly I love to have this in general as a mom to look up pediatric dosing for my kids!

3. Doximity-the best way to contact your patients without giving away your cell number! Let’s be real, we don’t want our personal info out there for patients or family members when we are off the clock trying to recuperate! It’s also HIPPA compliant so you aren’t risking breaking privacy policy.

4. CDC app- love this for the vaccine schedule and public health announcements like recalls etc!

What am I missing?? Any apps you guys have loved that I didn’t include?

... Read moreOkay, so I just shared some of my absolute go-to apps that I truly believe no nurse practitioner should be without. But let's be real, in our fast-paced world, our "smartphone" isn't just for calls anymore—it's practically a mobile command center! While those core apps are non-negotiable, I've found that expanding my digital toolkit has made an even bigger difference in my daily practice and even managing my "personal life" outside of work. Beyond the essentials, there's a whole world of apps designed to make our lives easier. For instance, while OpenEvidence is amazing for quick, AI-powered clinical insights, sometimes you need specialized calculators or diagnostic support. I've found apps like MDCalc or specific specialty apps (think cardiology or dermatology guides) to be incredibly useful. These often provide quick access to scoring systems, dosing calculators (like the Epocrates dosing calculator mentioned in some queries!), and differential diagnosis tools right at your fingertips. It's like having a mini-consultant in your pocket, making those on-the-spot decisions a little less stressful. Another category I can't stress enough is secure EMR access. Many electronic medical record systems now offer companion apps that allow you to securely review patient charts, labs, and even send messages to your team when you're not at your desk. Being able to quickly check something from a "casual setting" or even during a moment of "relaxation" (without logging into a full desktop) can be a huge time-saver and prevent minor issues from becoming bigger problems. Just remember to always prioritize HIPAA compliance and strong passwords! For those of us striving for continuous growth, continuing education (CE) apps are a game-changer. I know many of us are always looking for ways to stay current or even prepare for certifications like the FNP certification. Apps like FNP Mastery or other medical quiz apps allow you to fit in study sessions during commutes, lunch breaks, or even while waiting in line. It’s all about maximizing those small pockets of time! And let's talk about self-care, because let's face it, being an NP is demanding. I’ve started using mindfulness and meditation apps to help decompress after a long shift. Even a few minutes can make a huge difference. Plus, having a good note-taking app or a robust calendar app that syncs across devices helps me manage my professional appointments, patient follow-ups, and my "personal life" commitments all in one place. It helps keep my brain from feeling like it's constantly juggling a million things. When you're choosing new apps, always consider a few things: Security: Is it HIPAA-compliant? Does it protect patient data? Reliability: Does it work consistently? Are updates frequent? User-Friendliness: Is it intuitive? Does it genuinely save you time or provide value? Our "smartphone" has become an extension of our professional selves. Leveraging the right apps doesn't just make us more efficient; it helps us feel more in control, reduces stress, and ultimately allows us to provide better care. So, explore, experiment, and find what works best for your unique practice and lifestyle!
