Roach Dress🪳
My cockroach dress ⭐️
I was nominated for Boston Fashion Award’s Accessory Designer and knew I had to create something as campy and queer as I am to wear to the award show✨
✨Outfit Details:
I bought the dress at a secondhand dress consignment shop, stitched a little under 500 cockroaches on to the dress, thrifted the purse & hand stitched a giant cockroach on, made the earrings + hair clips + rings & added some extra roaches crawling up the heels I thrifted ⭐️✨

When I was nominated for the Boston Fashion Awards as an Accessory Designer, my mind immediately went to making a statement. I didn't just want to blend in; I wanted to create something that truly represented my campy and queer spirit. And what better way to do that than with a 'roach dress'? For me, cockroaches, often seen as symbols of the grotesque or undesirable, became a canvas for transformation. It was about taking something unexpected and making it undeniably chic and provocative. This wasn't just a dress; it was a conversation starter, a challenge to conventional beauty, and a celebration of embracing the unconventional. The journey began with finding the perfect base – a beautiful yellow strapless gown from a consignment shop. The idea was to give it a second life, an entirely new identity. Then came the meticulous task of attaching nearly 500 cockroach designs. Each one had to be carefully placed to create a flowing, organic pattern across the skirt and train, making it feel less like an infestation and more like an intentional, daring embellishment. It was a labor of love, requiring countless hours, but watching the vision come to life was incredibly rewarding. I even hand-stitched a large cockroach onto a thrifted purse to create a matching accessory, and crafted custom earrings, hair clips, and rings, ensuring every detail complemented the main piece. Even the heels I thrifted got their own crawling roach accents! Walking the red carpet at the 2024 Boston Fashion Awards in my 'cockroach dress' was an unforgettable experience. There were gasps, double-takes, and so many questions! People were fascinated by the intricate cockroach designs and the sheer audacity of the concept. It felt incredibly empowering to wear something so uniquely 'me' and to see the reactions it provoked. The dress sparked discussions about art, fashion, and personal expression, which was exactly what I hoped for. It wasn't about shock value alone; it was about pushing boundaries and celebrating creativity in its most unexpected forms. The matching purse with its prominent cockroach design also got a lot of attention, completing the bold statement. If my roach dress can inspire anyone, I hope it encourages you to embrace your own quirky ideas and not be afraid to express yourself through fashion. Upcycling is a fantastic way to create something truly original while being sustainable. Don't shy away from themes or materials that others might find strange. The most memorable fashion moments often come from daring to be different. Whether it’s a 'roach dress' or something entirely else, let your personal style shine through in the most authentic and creative way possible. It's about telling your story, one stitch, one embellishment, one bold design at a time.
