Calling all new dog moms! 4 helpful tips!

Bringing home a puppy has been a whirlwind of adorable chaos! In just two days, I’ve learned so much—and if you’re a new puppy parent, here are a few lessons you might find helpful:

🖤 Track Everything

Keeping a record of your puppy’s schedule—when they eat, pee, poop, nap, and play—can be a game changer. It helps you spot patterns and guide them into a routine that works for both of you. I’ve been using an app called DogNote, which is a great free option for tracking everything. A lot of other apps have expensive yearly fees, but this one has everything I need without the cost.

🖤 Consistency Is Everything

Puppies thrive on repetition. For example, I’ve been keeping my puppy tethered to me when we’re downstairs, while giving her freedom on the patio and in my bedroom. This helps her understand boundaries and keeps her safe.

When I started leash training, I rewarded her with treats, and she quickly caught on. By the end of the day, she was following me without treats. But the next day, I expected the same without reinforcing the behavior, and it didn’t go as smoothly. Puppies need consistent reinforcement to build and retain habits—it’s not something you can skip or rush.

🖤 Make the Time Work for You

Having a puppy doesn’t mean you have to stop getting things done. It’s about figuring out what tasks you can manage while they’re awake and tethered to you, and what’s better saved for nap time. For instance, I cleaned the patio while she played with a frozen carrot, which kept her entertained and allowed me to work. Planning your day this way keeps you productive and prevents burnout.

🖤 Pick Your Battles

Your puppy won’t be perfect, and that’s okay. Decide what behaviors are deal breakers for you and focus on those. For me, giving her attention when she whines isn’t an option, and she’s already learning not to do it. But when she nibbled on my blanket instead of her toys while we were outside, I let it slide—there’s plenty of time to teach her. Letting go of perfection makes things easier for both of you.

These first couple of days with my puppy have been full of surprises, lessons, and a lot of trial and error. I’m figuring it out one step at a time!

Start by initiating a consistent schedule to monitor their feeding, potty breaks, and playtime to cultivate healthy habits. Apps like DogNote can be invaluable in streamlining this process. Establishing boundaries early on is crucial; this not only ensures safety but also helps your puppy become well-adjusted. During training, consistency is key—reinforcing positive behavior will teach your pup important commands more effectively. Reward them with treats and praise to build a trusting relationship. Additionally, developing a routine that accommodates your tasks can enhance productivity while still giving your puppy attention. For example, choose to engage in chores during their nap times or opt for entertaining activities that allow you to work simultaneously. This balance will prevent burnout and ensure both you and your puppy remain happy. Lastly, remember that no puppy is perfect! Setting dealbreakers for unacceptable behaviors while allowing some leeway on others can ease the training process. Being a new dog mom is all about growth and learning, not just for your puppy but for yourself too. Embrace the journey!
