Snake!

Oh my goodness, you guys, I'm still reeling from what happened in my yard today! My daughter, bless her fearless heart, found a snake while I was in the middle of raking. My first thought was, 'Is it real? Is it playing dead?' because honestly, some of these creatures are so good at pretending! It got me thinking about how often we encounter unexpected wildlife, especially when we're trying to get our yards in shape. It certainly spiced up my afternoon chores! It's one thing to see a snake slithering away, but another entirely when a child decides to investigate! My heart practically stopped when she just picked it up. This whole incident really made me consider what I should do if we find another one, and how to teach my kids to react safely and responsibly around nature's surprises. As parents, we want our kids to be curious, but also safe. For anyone else out there who might stumble upon a garden visitor, here are a few things I've learned (often the hard way!). First, try to identify the snake if you can, but always from a safe distance. Most common garden snakes, like garter snakes, king snakes, or even ring-necked snakes, are harmless and actually quite beneficial for pest control, munching on slugs and insects. They'll usually want to get away from you more than you want to get away from them! But, it's always best to err on the side of caution and assume any snake could be venomous until you know for sure. A good rule for kids: teach them to never, ever touch a snake or any unfamiliar wild animal. Instead, they should come tell an adult immediately, pointing out where they saw it from a safe distance. If you find a snake that seems 'dead,' like the one my daughter encountered, it's still best not to touch it. Some snakes, like the eastern hognose snake, are famous for their dramatic 'playing possum' act – they'll flip onto their backs, open their mouths in a gaping display, and even release a foul-smelling musk to convince predators they're dead. It's a pretty convincing act! You might walk away thinking it's gone, only for it to spring back to life once the coast is clear. It's truly incredible how nature equips these creatures with such survival tactics. A good rule of thumb is: if you didn't see it die, assume it's still alive and capable of moving. As for getting rid of them, if it's a harmless snake and not in a threatening location (like right by your front door), it's usually best to just leave it alone. They're an important part of the ecosystem. If it's in an inconvenient spot or you suspect it's venomous, you can try to gently encourage it to move along with a long stick or spray it with a hose from a safe distance. Never, ever try to pick up a snake you're unsure about, or one that looks defensive. That's when bites can happen. If it's a persistent problem, or if you're genuinely concerned about a venomous snake, calling a local animal control or a professional wildlife removal service is always the safest and most responsible bet. They have the expertise and equipment to handle these situations safely. To reduce the chances of finding snakes in your yard, you can also take a few preventative steps. Keep your grass mowed short, clear away piles of leaves, wood, and rocks where snakes might hide, and seal up any cracks in your home's foundation or around pipes. Eliminating their hiding spots and food sources (like rodents) can make your yard less attractive to them. This whole experience was definitely a reminder that life with kids (and in the yard!) is full of surprises. One minute you're raking leaves, the next you're having a full-blown wildlife encounter!
