Nuclear weapons are possible using thorium reactor

2024/11/28 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! I've seen so many discussions online about whether thorium reactors can really be used to create nuclear weapons. For a long time, I actually believed they couldn't, imagining they were somehow 'safer' in that regard. But after diving deeper into the science, I've discovered that the common perception might not tell the whole story. Many people, myself included, heard that advanced designs like Thorium Molten Salt Reactors (TMSRs) weren't pursued during the 1960s because they weren't considered useful for the nuclear arms race. This idea really stuck with me! It made sense, right? If they couldn't make bombs, why bother? However, it seems that conclusion was a bit too simplistic. The truth is, the thorium fuel cycle, while different from uranium, does have the potential to produce fissile material. It all starts with Thorium-232 (Th232). When Th232 absorbs a neutron, it transforms into Protactinium-233 (Pa233). This Pa233 then undergoes a beta decay, eventually leading to Uranium-233 (U233). And here's the key: U233 is a fissile isotope, meaning it can sustain a nuclear chain reaction – making it suitable for weapons. So, if it's possible, why did the 'nuclear arms race' narrative suggest otherwise? Well, during the height of the Cold War, the focus was on producing weapons-grade plutonium-239 from uranium, or enriching uranium to high levels of U-235. The process to extract weapons-grade U-233 from the thorium cycle is more complex and usually produces U-233 contaminated with U-232, which emits strong gamma radiation. This makes handling and manufacturing U-233 bombs more challenging and dangerous, but not impossible. It was simply less desirable compared to plutonium for rapid, large-scale weapon production at the time. So, while thorium reactors offer many benefits, like potentially less long-lived waste and abundant fuel, it's important to understand that they aren't inherently 'proliferation-proof.' It's a complex area, and I've found that understanding the nuances, rather than just accepting common myths, really helps appreciate the full picture of nuclear technology. My takeaway? The science is fascinating, and things are rarely as simple as they first appear!
