Radiation fear, often called radiophobia, is a widespread concern deeply rooted in society's perception of nuclear energy and radiation exposure. As highlighted in the 2022 review by Robert B. Hayes, PhD, a nuclear engineering expert and health physics fellow, fear itself can cause more harm than actual low-dose radiation exposure. For instance, following incidents like Fukushima and Chernobyl, the panic and evacuations led to more immediate casualties and long-term health impacts than the radiation levels involved. In fact, radiation levels from such incidents were frequently close to or below natural background radiation levels, insufficient to produce measurable medical effects. However, public fear and misinformation can lead to harmful stress, psychosomatic illnesses, and disruptive responses—sometimes proving more dangerous than radiation exposure itself. This psychosomatic bias in radiation epidemiology stresses the importance of distinguishing myths from scientific facts. The fear of radiation also hinders the expanded use of nuclear energy as a clean, greenhouse gas-free power source. Despite advanced technical solutions for managing nuclear waste safely, societal apprehension remains a critical barrier. Addressing this requires transparent communication from experts and education to help people understand actual risks versus exaggerated fears. Moreover, lessons from past nuclear events emphasize the need for measured, evidence-based responses rather than panic-driven decisions. Unnecessary evacuations and anxieties have led to loss of life and quality of life, demonstrating that radiophobia's harm can be tangible. Understanding that radiation at low levels poses minimal health risks enables more rational approaches to nuclear energy policies and public health strategies. Greater awareness of scientific facts and risk assessments fosters informed decisions, balancing energy needs with safety. By separating myths from facts, we can reduce the social stigma of radiation and leverage nuclear technology's potential to combat climate change effectively.
