As someone progressing through nursing school, I’ve found that mastering the fundamentals of nursing is absolutely crucial for building confidence and competence in clinical settings. One tip I always share with fellow students is to familiarize yourself thoroughly with common abbreviations such as ADL (Activity of Daily Living), ABG (Arterial Blood Gas), and PRN (As Needed) because these crop up constantly in patient charts and communication. Understanding the nursing process—ADPIE, which stands for Assess, Diagnose, Plan, Implement, and Evaluate—is another cornerstone. Memorizing the steps helps structure your care plans and ensures you deliver patient-centered care effectively. During my clinical rotations, I realized the importance of prioritizing patient needs using tools like Maslow’s Hierarchy, where physiological needs (airway, breathing, circulation) always come first. Infection control cannot be overstated, especially knowing the right sequence to don and doff PPE helps prevent hospital-associated infections like CAUTI or VAP. This practice became second nature to me after multiple clinical hours working in acute care settings. Medication administration demands precision. I suggest practicing the '6 Rights'—right patient, medication, dose, route, time, and documentation—to avoid errors. Whether giving oral meds or injections like IM or IV, technique and patient safety always come first. Finally, integrating ethical principles such as autonomy, beneficence, and confidentiality guided my interactions with patients, respecting their rights and building trust. By continually reviewing these fundamentals and applying them in real-life scenarios, nursing students can feel better prepared to handle the demands of nursing care. Stay organized, practice consistently, and remember – confidence grows with knowledge!
