Misconceptions about nursing school 🧠
These are some things that people told when I started nursing school. 🩺
Of course these statements scared me but I wasnt going to let someone’s experience ruin/determine my nursing school journey! 💗
1️⃣ “you will be too busy for anything & say goodbye to your social life”
In my first semester of nursing school I took this literally and disregarded everything, I was so burnt out that semester and I told myself that I will no longer sacrifice things that brought me joy! Now I make time to go to concerts, having bestie dates, and little trips to look forward to
2️⃣ “Med surg clinicals are the worst and boring”
About 99% of nursing students say that med surg clinicals are the worst but from my perspective its not bad at ALL! I learned the most in my med surg clinicals and there is always something to do!
3️⃣“You’re going to be studying 24/7”
Finding your learning style and creating a study schedule is so important! And never cram before an exam! I study 2-3 hours a day or at least 1 hour a day!
⁉️What are some things that were told to you that ended up not being true?

Starting nursing school often brings many preconceived notions that can intimidate new students. It’s important to understand that many of these myths don’t hold true when approached with the right mindset and strategies. One major misconception is that nursing school demands giving up any social life and personal joy. While nursing programs are challenging, effective time management and prioritizing personal well-being make it possible to maintain a balanced life. Scheduling time for social activities such as concerts or meetups helps reduce burnout and improves mental health. Medical-surgical (med surg) clinical rotations are frequently labeled as tedious and overwhelming. However, these clinicals are some of the most valuable experiences for nursing students, offering hands-on opportunities to sharpen essential nursing skills. Being proactive, curious, and open-minded during clinicals ensures continuous learning and professional growth. The belief that students must study around the clock is another myth. Instead, adopting a personalized study plan that matches one’s learning style is far more effective. Consistent daily study sessions of 1-3 hours contribute to better information retention and reduce exam stress. Avoiding last-minute cramming by spreading study sessions over time enhances performance. The OCR content reveals similar clarifications, emphasizing that organization and scheduling help balance school and personal life; med surg rotations provide the greatest learning opportunities; and studying smarter, not harder, is key. These insights align perfectly with effective nursing education practices. Additionally, addressing misconceptions fosters mental resilience and empowers students to take control of their learning journey. Nursing school is rigorous but manageable with discipline, balance, and a positive outlook. Ultimately, debunking fears helps students embrace the rewarding challenges of becoming competent healthcare professionals. For those entering nursing programs, the message is clear: don’t let myths determine your experience. Instead, focus on building strong study habits, seek learning opportunities actively, and maintain a fulfilling personal life to thrive throughout nursing school and beyond.
