ADN | My nontraditional nursing school journey 🩺

My nursing school journey is a bit non-traditional, I decided to get my ADN instead of going straight to a 4 year 🩺

1️⃣ It was an easy transition since I did all of my nursing pre-requisites at my local community college. Its also very close to home

2️⃣ Tuition. The tuition for my nursing program is a little over $10K. which is the cheapest I’ve ever seen. I live in California and the tuition prices are insane! Nursing programs are well over 30K whether its public or private. I’m beyond grateful that FASFA covers my tuition so the cost is covered! The only expenses I have to pay for supplies and books.

3️⃣ Hospitals will pay for my bachelors! Getting my BSN will only take less than a year and many hospitals will fully pay for my BSN program. Im able to work as an RN while having my program paid for!

4️⃣ Ultimately choosing the community college route has saved me so much money. I knew that I didnt want to be in student debt. I will say that nursing programs are extremely competitive to get into. I was listed as an alternate twice before I got in. But I honestly wouldnt of have chosen a different path!

🧠 Whats does your nursing journey look like?

... Read moreChoosing a nontraditional path in nursing education can be a strategic and financially wise decision, especially for students seeking to minimize debt and enter the workforce sooner. Many aspiring nurses begin their journey by earning an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) through community college programs, which often offer a more affordable and accessible alternative to traditional four-year university degrees. Community colleges provide a convenient location and flexible schedules, making it easier for students to complete their pre-requisite courses and clinical placements locally. This is beneficial not only for saving on transportation and housing but also for maintaining personal support networks during the rigorous training period. Tuition costs for ADN programs typically range significantly lower than bachelor's programs. For example, in states like California where tuition fees for four-year nursing programs can exceed $30,000, ADN programs can cost around $10,000 or less. Financial aid options such as FAFSA greatly enhance affordability, covering tuition so students only need to budget for supplies and books. A compelling advantage of pursuing an ADN is the availability of hospital tuition reimbursement programs. Many healthcare institutions encourage their registered nurses (RNs) to advance their education by offering to cover BSN degree costs. This pathway allows RNs to work while completing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, often within a year, enhancing career prospects and earning potential without incurring additional debt. It is important to recognize that nursing programs can be competitive, with many applicants placed on waitlists or listed as alternates before acceptance. Persistence and dedication are essential for success. The nontraditional ADN route, however, presents a viable and practical option for many students who prioritize affordability, local access, and incremental educational advancement. This approach reflects a broader trend in nursing education emphasizing career flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and alignment with local healthcare workforce needs. For students evaluating their nursing journey, an ADN program coupled with hospital-supported BSN completion offers a balanced combination of hands-on experience and academic growth.

I’m going thru the process now, it is so difficult looking at all the reviews hearing so many people experiences what schools to choose. It’s overwhelming for sure I would love to go in person, but most schools require full-time for nursing and I unfortunately can’t commit to full-time so I think I’m going to try Joyce university
