📄 My Favorite Quotes: “Sweet Autumn”
💭 My Thoughts: This is a great book. While reading the first book I always wondered what was Finny thinking or what was Finny doing. This book covered most of that. It’s a very emotional book (or maybe I’m just very emotional, who knows). Although I’m only 50% done with the book, I can tell you that it’s an amazing book. There have been times where I have to put it down because I was physically hurting, that’s how great Nowlin’s writing is. I like that there is more than one perspective on this book because it helps you understand things from multiple points of view and helps you understand the reason for most things.
... Read moreOkay, so if you've stumbled upon 'If Only I Had Told Her' and are wondering where to start, you're not alone! Many readers, myself included, discover Laura Nowlin's incredible work through this book. But here's a little secret: 'If Only I Had Told Her' is actually the companion novel to her first book, 'If He Had Been With Me'. While you can certainly enjoy 'If Only I Had Told Her' on its own, reading 'If He Had Been With Me' first really enhances the experience. It gives you Autumn's full story, and then 'If Only I Had Told Her' beautifully dives into Finny's perspective, offering a heart-wrenching look at the same events from his eyes. It’s like getting two sides of an incredibly emotional coin, and it truly makes you understand the depth of their connection and the tragedy that unfolds.
Speaking of that tragedy, the plot, as hinted in my initial review, centers around Autumn and Finny, childhood friends who finally realize their feelings for each other right after graduation. But then August 8th changes everything. What unfolds is a truly poignant story about first love, loss, and the devastating impact of a single moment. Reading about Autumn and Finny, and seeing how their lives intertwine, felt incredibly real. Laura Nowlin masterfully crafts these characters, making you feel every pang of their joy and sorrow. You might find yourself wondering, just like I did, what Finny was thinking or feeling during crucial moments in 'If He Had Been With Me', and this book delivers those insights in a raw, honest way.
Now, for a question many of you might have: 'Is If Only I Had Told Her spicy or smutty?' Given it's a young adult novel, I can tell you that while the romance is intense and deeply emotional, it focuses more on the emotional connection and the profound bond between Autumn and Finny rather than explicit scenes. It’s a powerful love story, but its 'spice' comes from the depth of feeling and the heartbreak, not from sexual content. This is a book that will make your heart ache in the best way possible, exploring themes of grief, regret, and the 'love arrives too late' trope that is just so beautifully tragic.
The beauty of this book also lies in its exploration of themes like destiny and the different perspectives on a shared past. Seeing events through Finny's eyes, after experiencing them through Autumn's, adds so much richness and complexity. It’s a testament to Nowlin's writing that she can make you feel such profound empathy for both characters. If you found yourself caught up in phrases like "Sweet Autumn" or the raw emotion of their story, you know what I mean.
If you loved the emotional depth of 'If Only I Had Told Her' and are searching for similar reads, I highly recommend exploring other powerful YA contemporary novels that tackle heavy themes and first loves. Books like 'They Both Die at the End' by Adam Silvera, 'The Fault in Our Stars' by John Green, or even 'Five Feet Apart' by Rachael Lippincott and Mikki Daughtry offer similar emotional journeys. These stories, much like Laura Nowlin's work, delve into the complexities of young love and loss, leaving a lasting impact. Getting to read about Finny's perspective was truly an experience I won't forget.
