reaching out to brands in hopes of getting PR

2024/12/2 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so you've seen those gorgeous PR packages influencers unbox, and maybe you're thinking, "How do they do that?" Well, guess what, it's not always about having millions of followers! I'm here to tell you my personal experience and how I started reaching out to brands myself – and actually got responses, even from big names like Urban Decay, Estee Lauder, and NYX Professional Makeup, just like you see in my DMs! It can feel intimidating to hit send on that first email, but trust me, it's totally worth it. The key is to be genuine, professional, and clear about your value. Here’s my step-by-step guide on how I approach brands for PR and collaborations: 1. Know Your Niche & Audience: Before you even think about emailing, get clear on who you are and what you offer. What kind of content do you create? Who follows you? Brands want to partner with creators whose audience aligns with their target market. For me, it was all about beauty, makeup, and lifestyle, which naturally suited brands like Petajane Beauty and others in the cosmetics industry. 2. Build a Solid Portfolio (Even if it’s Small): You don't need to be an A-list influencer, but you do need to show brands you're serious. This means having consistent, high-quality content on your platform(s) – whether that's Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or a blog. Brands will look at your engagement rates, post quality, and how you interact with your audience. Make sure your profile looks polished and professional. 3. Research, Research, Research: This is crucial! Don't just blast out generic emails. Spend time identifying brands you genuinely love and use, and whose values align with yours. Then, find the right contact person. Look for press, PR, marketing, or collaboration emails on their website, LinkedIn, or even by DMing their social media for the right contact info. A personalized email goes a long, long way. 4. Craft a Compelling Email (My Secret Sauce!): Clear Subject Line: Make it stand out! Something like "Collaboration Inquiry – [Your Name] x [Brand Name]" or "Content Creator Partnership Opportunity – [Your Niche/Platform]". Personalized Introduction: Address them by name if you can find it. Start by expressing your genuine love for their brand and a specific product. "As a long-time fan of your [mention specific product, e.g., Urban Decay Naked Palette], I've always admired your commitment to [mention brand value, e.g., high-quality ingredients]." State Your Value Proposition: This is where you shine! Explain *what you can do for them*. Don't just ask for free stuff. Offer content ideas: "I envision creating a stunning [Reel/TikTok/Blog Post] featuring your new [Product] to showcase its versatility to my engaged audience of [mention demographics, e.g., 25-34 year old beauty enthusiasts]." Include Your Metrics: Briefly share your relevant stats: follower count, average engagement rate, unique monthly visitors (if a blog), and audience demographics. Link directly to your media kit (if you have one) or your best-performing content. Call to Action: End by suggesting the next step. "I'd love to discuss potential collaboration opportunities further. Please let me know if you're open to connecting!" or "I've attached my media kit for your review and look forward to hearing from you." Keep it Concise: Busy PR folks don't have time for novels. Get to the point! 5. Follow Up (But Don't Be Annoying): If you don't hear back in about a week, a polite follow-up email is perfectly acceptable. Just a quick, "Hope this email finds you well! I just wanted to gently bump my previous message regarding a potential collaboration..." is usually enough. After that, let it go for a while. It might take a few tries, but don't get discouraged! My journey to getting those fabulous packages from brands like Urban Decay and Estee Lauder started with just reaching out. Your sign to just reach out is right here! Consistency and a genuine approach will open so many doors.
