Chef's Tip:

Press your tofu for at least 30 minutes before cooking.

Removing excess moisture helps it brown better and gives it a texture that's much closer to taco meat.

... Read moreIf you're new to cooking with tofu or looking to make your taco night healthier and more plant-based, this tofu taco recipe is a great place to start. One tip I've learned from experience is that pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture really makes a difference. It helps the tofu crisp up and absorb the taco seasoning better, giving it a texture closer to traditional taco meat. I usually press my tofu for at least 30 minutes using a tofu press or by wrapping it in a clean kitchen towel and placing a heavy pan on top. Making homemade flour tortillas can be surprisingly simple and rewarding. Rolling them thin and cooking them on a hot dry skillet until lightly browned creates a soft yet chewy tortilla that complements the savory tofu filling perfectly. If you're short on time, store-bought tortillas work fine, but fresh tortillas elevate the dish. For the taco seasoning, the blend of Mexican chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, and oregano brings out a smoky, slightly spicy flavor that pairs beautifully with tofu's mild taste. Adding a pinch of cayenne can give an optional spicy kick. Cooking the tofu with diced onions and garlic adds depth and aroma that really enhance the flavor profile. I like to pile my tacos high with shredded lettuce or spinach for crunch, diced tomatoes, sliced avocado for creaminess, and a sprinkle of shredded cheddar or Mexican cheese. A dollop of sour cream or a spoonful of fresh salsa like pico de gallo ties everything together nicely. Fresh cilantro and jalapeños add a nice herbal freshness and heat, if you enjoy that. Even if you’re not vegetarian or vegan, incorporating dishes like tofu tacos into your weekly meals can add variety and boost your intake of plant-based proteins. Plus, it’s budget-friendly and easy to customize based on your favorite toppings or what you have on hand. Give these tofu tacos a try for a fun, delicious way to switch up your taco night routine while enjoying wholesome, flavorful homemade food.
