A "creative solution"

Ya ever realize that your drawing violates the laws of physics in such an egregious way, but you don't have the energy to fix it?

For some reason, I wanted Rin's robe to be a cut-off in this image. Why? I guess so I could show the spots on her belly? But halfway through drawing the line art, I realized that a cut-off robe wouldn't stay closed without anything tying it together, and I was too damn lazy to add a sash because that would change the whole shape of the outfit. So, I just added a single string to hold it all together, and called it a day 🫠

I like to think a string was all she had on hand to fix this. Why she's still hanging on to a robe that is missing its bottom and a whole sleeve, is beyond me. She's just stubborn like that.

Artists often have to decide between correcting these issues meticulously or implementing simple, creative fixes that preserve the feel and flow of their artwork without requiring extensive revisions. This approach is exemplified by adding a single string to hold together a cut-off robe, cleverly addressing the problem of clothing staying closed without a sash or other detailed fasteners. This method highlights the importance of balancing creativity and practicality in art. Rather than focusing solely on physics or exact accuracy, introducing a subtle detail like a string can maintain the outfit’s shape while allowing the artist to keep intended design elements, such as showing specific character features like spots on the belly. It’s a reminder that sometimes minimal adjustments can greatly enhance both the visual interest and believability of an illustration without adding complexity. Additionally, this technique showcases an artist’s narrative thinking—imagining why the character might still wear a damaged robe, which adds depth to the illustration and character story. It encourages artists to think beyond the visual to include personality and storytelling in their work, enriching the viewer's experience. Creative problem-solving also applies beyond character clothing — it’s useful in all art forms where physical constraints might conflict with artistic vision. Using subtle visual cues to signal repairs or make modifications can help maintain artistic integrity while respecting real-world logic. For artists seeking inspiration, communities like #artistsoflemon8 and #thereifixedit encourage sharing works-in-progress and creative fixes, fostering collaboration and growth. Ultimately, success in artistic creation often depends on combining imaginative solutions with thoughtful design, making these challenges opportunities to innovate rather than obstacles.
