how I style my IKEA bookshelf
IKEA is my ultimate go to place to get basic furniture pieces. The Billy shelf ($89) is one of my fave buys because of its simplicity and durability. For my bookshelf, I wanted something large enough to hold a good amount of my books (this is only part of my collection haha), but small enough to fit the little nook beside my best. Billy was the perfect fit!
I was able to put it together on my own in a few hours, which is a huge achievement for me. I’ve been known to call the task rabbit more often than I should. Here’s how I organised and styled Billy shelf:
💫 Books: this one might be obvious, but I’m a huge fan of filling your shelf chock full with books. Books are the ultimate shelf accessory because of how colourful they are. Also, don't be afraid to get creative with stacking.
💫 Decorative candles: emphasis on the decorative part. Candles can be a great way to style your shelf, but only if you can stay committed to never actually lighting them. Otherwise, that's just a hazard waiting to happen.
💫 Aesthetic lamp: instead of having a lamp on my bedside table, I opted to put one on my shelf instead. This green mushroom lamp from SKLUM ($48) is a great size for my shelf, and I love how it illuminates my books when switched on.
💫 Plants: plants are always a great way to style anything! I love how my baby plant adds both warmth and colour to my bookshelf.

Since sharing how I styled my IKEA Billy, I've been thinking about even more ways to make this versatile piece shine, especially for those looking to maximize its potential in a bedroom setting or with unique lighting. Speaking of making your space cozy, let's dive a bit deeper into lighting. My green mushroom lamp is a personal favorite (you can spot it illuminating my books in the photos!), but there are so many other ways to add a warm glow to your IKEA Billy. Have you ever considered adding LED strip lights along the undersides of the shelves? They can create such a dreamy, soft backlight, perfect for highlighting your collection or for those late-night reading sessions in bed without harsh overhead lights. And for a touch of whimsy, fairy lights woven around your books or plants (like my little potted plant friend that adds so much life!) can truly transform the vibe. Think about warm white fairy lights for a cozy feel, or even battery-operated puck lights for specific areas. It's all about layering light to create ambiance and draw attention to your favorite decorative candles or colorful books. Since my Billy bookshelf lives right by my bed, I've learned a few tricks to make it a true bedroom asset. It’s not just for books! I use the top shelf for my current reads, a small water carafe, and my watch – keeping bedside essentials within arm's reach. For a really clean look, especially if you're aiming for a 'closed bookshelf' feel without actually having doors, stylish storage boxes or woven baskets can hide away clutter like charging cables, remote controls, or even seasonal accessories. This keeps your space looking serene and organized, which is key for a relaxing bedroom. You could even integrate a small decorative mirror on one of the shelves to create a mini vanity station, or use the top for a small plant that thrives near a window, giving you that 'window shelves IKEA' feel. The key is thinking beyond just books and considering what functional items can also be beautiful. Let's talk more about those beautiful books and creative storage! Beyond just stacking, try arranging them by color for a vibrant display, or group them by genre so your favorites are easy to find. I love creating little 'vignettes' on each shelf – a stack of books, a small decorative candle (remember, decorative only and never lit!), and maybe a framed photo or a unique trinket. Don't underestimate the power of decorative bookends – they can be art pieces themselves! And those colorful books you see in my pictures? They're not just storage; they're decor! Mixing vertical and horizontal stacks adds visual interest and makes the shelf feel more curated. Even a simple change like turning some books with their spines facing inwards (if you prefer a more minimalist or neutral look) can completely change the aesthetic. Consider rotating your decor with the seasons – a small pumpkin for fall, twinkle lights for winter – to keep your bookshelf feeling fresh and engaging. Ultimately, your IKEA Billy bookshelf is a canvas for your personality. It’s amazing how a simple, affordable piece can become such a focal point with just a little thought and creativity. Whether it’s a dedicated cozy reading nook, a stylish storage solution, or a display for your most cherished items, make it yours. Happy styling!
