... Read moreIt's such a wonderful feeling to 'readjust your crown' and fall back in love with your locs, especially after a big change like a short haircut or reattachment journey! I know that feeling of wanting to feel like your old self again, or even a brand new, refreshed version. That's why I'm so excited to talk about one of my favorite ways to elevate my locs and truly make them feel like a crown: loc petals! If you've never tried them, loc petals are a simply stunning way to style your locs, transforming them into beautiful, soft, flower-like shapes. They add such an elegant and unique touch, perfect for special occasions or just when you want to feel extra beautiful. For me, after getting my locs reattached, I was looking for styles that would celebrate my journey and make me feel confident, and loc petals did exactly that. They really helped me embrace this new phase of my locs. So, how do you create these gorgeous loc petals? It's easier than you might think! First, you'll want to make sure your locs are clean and moisturized. This helps them be more pliable and reduces frizz. Then, choose a section of locs you want to turn into a petal. Usually, I work with 2-3 locs together for a fuller petal, but you can use more or fewer depending on the size you want. Here's my go-to method: Prep Your Locs: Start with slightly damp or well-moisturized locs. I like to use a light locking spray or rosewater to keep them hydrated. Section & Twist: Take your chosen locs and gently twist them together from the root to about halfway down. Form the Loop: Now, take the twisted section and loop it back towards your scalp, creating a 'U' shape or a soft curve. This will be the base of your petal. Secure the Loop: Using a small rubber band that matches your hair color, or a bobby pin, secure the loop close to your scalp. Make sure it's snug but not too tight. Fan Out the Ends: Take the remaining ends of the locs from your loop and gently fan them out, spreading them to create the 'petal' shape. You can use another small bobby pin or two to secure these fanned-out ends to the locs underneath, or even to each other, to hold the shape. Repeat: Continue this process around your head, or wherever you want to place your petals. You can create a crown of petals, a side swept look, or even incorporate them into an updo. What I love most about loc petals is their versatility. You can make them large and dramatic, or small and delicate. You can even add hair jewelry or flowers in the center of a petal for an extra touch of glamour. To make them last, I always wear a silk scarf or bonnet at night. When it’s time to take them down, be gentle to avoid any unnecessary tension on your locs. Experiment with different sizes and placements to find what looks best on you. It's truly a beautiful way to express your creativity and show off the unique beauty of your locs. Feeling good about your hair is such a boost, and loc petals are definitely a style that makes me feel elegant and put-together. Give them a try on your own loc journey!
