Bringing home those adorable baby chicks and ducklings from Tractor Supply was just the beginning of our amazing journey! Once the initial excitement settled, the real adventure of learning how to care for our new fluffy friends began. I quickly realized there's so much more to it than just providing a warm spot. First up was setting up their new home, the brooder. We made sure it was warm and safe, using plenty of fresh wood shavings as bedding. It's important to keep them dry and clean to prevent pasty butt and other health issues. We installed a heat lamp to maintain the perfect temperature – around 95°F for the first week, gradually decreasing. Watching them huddle under it one minute and then darting around the next is just the cutest! For food and water, we got a specialized chick feeder and a small waterer. Ducklings, especially, are messy drinkers, so keeping the waterer clean and full is a constant task! They love to dunk their whole heads, which is adorable but also leads to wet bedding quickly. I've learned that clean water is non-negotiable for healthy growth. One of the big questions I had, and I know many new owners do too, is about identifying sexes. We got some of our chicks as 'Cinnamon Queen Straight Runs,' meaning you get a mix of males and females, and you often have to wait to find out! For rooster chicks, we're keeping an eye out for tell-tale signs as they grow: larger, redder combs and wattles, more elaborate feathering (especially on the hackle and saddle), and a more upright, proud stance. Of course, the ultimate giveaway will be their first crow! It’s a bit of a waiting game, but it's part of the fun of raising them from tiny baby chicks. How to sex a duck baby is another tricky one! Unlike some chicken breeds, you can't easily tell by feather color or type when they're ducklings. Vent sexing is a technique usually done by experienced breeders, and I'm definitely not there yet! For now, I'm just watching them closely. As they mature, male ducks (drakes) often have a softer, raspier quack compared to the louder, more distinct quack of a female duck. Drakes of some breeds also develop a curled 'drake feather' on their tail. It's fascinating to observe these subtle changes as they grow from tiny fluffy ducklings into their adult selves. Beyond identifying them, daily care is crucial. We make sure they always have access to fresh starter feed – a high-protein chick starter for the first few weeks. Keeping their brooder spacious enough for them to move around, with constant food and water, is key to preventing stress and ensuring they thrive. Every day is a new discovery, and it's amazing to watch these little creatures grow into healthy, happy birds. It's a lot of work, but the joy they bring makes every minute worth it!
