In one interview I was enthusiastically assured that overtime wasn't an issue, but if you pick up an extra shift they pay in gift cards so that it saves you on taxes.

I know they're trying to save themselves employment taxes and time and a half, they're not doing me any favors. I declined their offer.

Interviews should not only be a chance for employers to evaluate candidates but also for candidates to assess their potential employers. Common red flags include vague answers about job roles and expectations, excessive focus on benefits rather than job responsibilities, and discouragement of questions from candidates. If an employer suggests unconventional payment methods, like gift cards, it could indicate non-traditional compliance with labor laws. Additionally, listen for language that minimizes employees' needs, such as 'it's not a big deal' or 'everyone does it.' Also, take note if the interviewer seems unprepared or only provides vague responses about company culture and values, which may reflect disorganization or a lack of transparency. Be observant and trust your instincts during interviews. If something feels off, it likely is. Conduct further research on the company and its reviews to gather insights that support your findings. Remember, interviews are a two-way street, and it's essential to seek out a workplace that aligns with your values and offers a supportive environment. Prioritize your well-being when exploring new job opportunities.
