If you drive extensively, say 20,000 miles annually, leasing can lead to hefty overage charges at the end of your term, making it a very expensive option. You also don't build equity, and customization is usually off-limits. Buying, on the other hand, means the car is yours. While initial payments might be higher, you're building equity, and there are no mileage penalties. If you plan to keep a car for many years, like my current Mazda CX-30 2.5 S, buying often makes more financial sense in the long run. You can also personalize it without worrying about lease agreements. For high-mileage drivers, buying is almost always the more practical and cost-effective choice, as you won't be penalized for your daily commute or road trips. It really boils down to your driving habits, budget, and how long you envision keeping the car. Do You Really Need a Car in Seattle? Now, let's talk about living in Seattle. Before I decided to get my CX-30, I wondered, 'Do I even need a car here?' Seattle's public transportation network, including the King County Metro buses and the Link light rail, is pretty extensive, especially if you live and work along major corridors. For downtown commuters or those in highly walkable neighborhoods, relying solely on public transport, walking, or biking is totally feasible and often preferable given our traffic and parking challenges. Ridesharing apps and car-sharing services like Zipcar also offer convenient alternatives for occasional trips. However, for me, and for many others, a car makes life significantly easier. If your commute takes you outside the main public transit routes, or if you love exploring the beautiful Pacific Northwest on weekends – think hiking, skiing, or beach trips – having your own vehicle, like a reliable SUV such as my CX-30, is invaluable. Ultimately, whether you 'need' a car in Seattle depends entirely on your lifestyle, where you live, where you work, and your personal preferences for convenience and exploration.
