A day in the life of an Omena Trader
Over the past year I have dedicated a significant amount of my time and resources into learning how the #omena industry in Kenya works and one of my favorite things about this process was spending the entire day with Mama Isaac and some of the women who are deeply involved in the Omena Trade.
Stay tuned for “A Day In The Life of an Omena Trader,” which is a short film about the life and stories of two women who are working in the Omena Trade and how they are providing for their families through it despite all the challenges that they face on a daily basis.
Join me @boonboonacoffee on February 1st to learn more about why our focus with @madarakafestival is to elevate the women and men in the Omena Trade and how that ensures the protection of the biggest Lake in Africa, Lake Victoria that’s locally known as Nam Lolwe.

The Omena trade, crucial for many families in Kenya, involves fishing for small fish known as Omena, which is a significant source of income. Women in this trade often overcome various challenges, including gender biases and environmental issues, to support their households. Education and community support play vital roles in empowering these traders, enabling them to navigate market fluctuations. Additionally, sustainable fishing practices help protect Lake Victoria, ensuring that the ecosystem remains viable for future generations. Initiatives like the Madaraka Festival highlight the importance of these traders, focusing on their contributions and promoting awareness about environmental conservation. Learning about their lives reflects the broader socio-economic dynamics in Kenya, making the Omena trade an essential topic in discussions about sustainability and women's empowerment.
