Butterfly: Anyone Really Honest on Trans Dating

I downloaded Butterfly because it’s one of the few dating apps created specifically for trans people and those who genuinely want to date us. At first glance, the mission seems pure: build a safe space where we don’t have to explain ourselves or fear being fetishized. Sounds ideal, right? 🦋

But after a few weeks of swiping and chatting, I started to feel something was off. Profiles that say “no drama, just vibes” — but can’t even tell you what they're looking for. People who claim they “love and respect trans folks” — but vanish after asking invasive questions. It’s not just disappointing — it’s exhausting.

Butterfly wants to be a platform for authentic, respectful connections, but sometimes it feels like another app where people hide behind perfect words and pretty photos. Some are curious, some are kind, and some are just... not ready. And when you’re a trans person putting yourself out there, honesty isn’t just important — it’s everything.

That’s why I’m asking: Is anyone really honest on Butterfly? Or are we all still figuring out what real, respectful connection even looks like in 2025?

Whether you’ve had great experiences or total letdowns, share your story below. Let’s talk about what we really want from trans-centered dating apps.

... Read moreAfter sharing my initial thoughts on the Butterfly app, I've realized so many of us are asking the same questions. We download these apps, hoping for a haven where we don't have to constantly educate or fear being misunderstood. The mission of a dedicated trans dating app like Butterfly sounds perfect on paper – a place for genuine connection within our community or with allies who truly respect us. But the reality can often feel a lot more complex, right? It makes me think about other platforms people often mention in the same breath. Beyond Butterfly, there are apps like Tser, Translove, and even more general ones like ts.dating that aim to cater to trans individuals. Each one promises a unique space, but the underlying challenges seem universal. Are these apps truly delivering on their promise of fostering honest, respectful connections? Or are we still encountering the same old issues, just on a different interface? One of the biggest takeaways from my time on Butterfly, and conversations I've had since, is that just because an app is designed for trans people, it doesn't automatically filter out dishonesty or problematic behavior. I've heard stories, similar to my own, of people on Butterfly and other trans dating apps who are vague about their intentions, ask deeply personal and invasive questions too soon, or simply disappear. It’s disheartening when you’re genuinely putting yourself out there, hoping for something real. The 'no drama, just vibes' profiles often turn out to be exactly the opposite, leaving you feeling more drained than connected. So, how do we navigate this landscape? How do we find those truly honest connections we're all craving on a trans dating app? It starts with us. Being incredibly clear about what you're looking for in your profile is key. If you're seeking a serious relationship, say it. If you're looking for friendship first, be upfront. Don't be afraid to set boundaries early on. When someone asks an inappropriate question, it's okay to call them out or simply unmatch. Your safety and comfort come first. Also, pay close attention to how people communicate. Are they genuinely interested in getting to know *you*, or are they focused on aspects of your identity in a way that feels objectifying? Red flags can be subtle: overly sexual messages too early, an unwillingness to share basic information about themselves while demanding it from you, or a general lack of respect for your boundaries. Remember, we deserve partners who see and value us for who we are entirely, not just for a specific aspect of our identity. Whether you're using Butterfly, Tser, Translove, or any other platform, the goal remains the same: finding someone who respects your journey and is honest about theirs. Let's keep sharing our experiences to make these spaces better for everyone.
