“Flat Meat Philosophy” 🌭🥪

This morning, in improv class, we were thrown into one of those silly debates that somehow always take on a life of their own:

Is a hotdog a sandwich? 🌭🥪

Shannon was tasked with debating in favor of a hotdog being a sandwich. I argued no, shape matters. Sandwiches belong to the realm of flat meat—deli slices stacked between bread, right? A hotdog, on the other hand, has its own shape and its own category. It doesn’t need to be forced into the sandwich box.

Then my opponent responded and repeated my words back to me with a twist:

“…based on your Flat Meat Philosophy…”

And just like that, a phrase was born.

I couldn’t stop laughing—but I also couldn’t stop thinking. Because here’s the truth: Flat Meat Philosophy isn’t just about sandwiches and hotdogs. It’s about life.

Tater tots and baked potatoes come from the same core ingredient, but they offer us totally different experiences. A steak and hamburger? Same source, different encounter. The way something is shaped changes how we receive it.

Mainstream media does this all the time. Reframing facts to fit a narrative.

Our childhood is filled with examples.

Too often, we get stuck believing that one version of something somehow represents all the versions of something. We resist new shapes, new experiences, even when the core ingredients (or facts) are the same. But sometimes the wisdom, the love, or the joy we’re seeking doesn’t require something brand new—it just requires us to be open to receiving the same essence in a new form.

Flat Meat Philosophy is what happens when we cling to the flatness of an old experience instead of embracing when life takes a new shape.

✨ Same ingredients + Different shape = New experience.✨

👉 What’s your favorite example of the same ingredient, different shape in life—or food?

... Read moreThe 'Flat Meat Philosophy' offers a fascinating lens through which we can understand much more than just food categories. In life, just as in food, the way something is presented or shaped can dramatically alter our perception and emotional connection to it. For example, consider the versatile potato. Whether it's a crispy tater tot or a soft baked potato, the core ingredient remains the same, but the experience is distinctly different. This concept can be extended to relationships, work, or personal growth—where the essential qualities may be consistent, but the form or context changes everything. Beyond individual experiences, this philosophy challenges us to be open to new perspectives and not cling rigidly to old definitions or frameworks. In media and communication, narratives are often shaped to fit specific agendas, which can twist facts much like reshaping the form of something familiar. Recognizing this can empower us to seek the underlying truth beyond appearances. In daily life, embracing the 'Flat Meat Philosophy' means appreciating that new experiences don’t always require entirely new ingredients—sometimes the magic comes from seeing the familiar in a new shape. Whether it’s a hotdog refusing to be boxed as a sandwich or reevaluating a familiar challenge through a fresh perspective, this mindset encourages flexibility, creativity, and deeper understanding. So, what everyday examples resonate with you where same ingredients have been transformed into fresh experiences? Perhaps a favorite recipe with a twist, or a situation in life where a new approach changed your outlook. Sharing these stories can inspire others to embrace change while appreciating the constants in life.
