“Flat Meat Philosophy” 🌭🥪
This morning, in improv class, we were thrown into one of those silly debates that somehow always take on a life of their own:
Is a hotdog a sandwich? 🌭🥪
Shannon was tasked with debating in favor of a hotdog being a sandwich. I argued no, shape matters. Sandwiches belong to the realm of flat meat—deli slices stacked between bread, right? A hotdog, on the other hand, has its own shape and its own category. It doesn’t need to be forced into the sandwich box.
Then my opponent responded and repeated my words back to me with a twist:
“…based on your Flat Meat Philosophy…”
And just like that, a phrase was born.
I couldn’t stop laughing—but I also couldn’t stop thinking. Because here’s the truth: Flat Meat Philosophy isn’t just about sandwiches and hotdogs. It’s about life.
Tater tots and baked potatoes come from the same core ingredient, but they offer us totally different experiences. A steak and hamburger? Same source, different encounter. The way something is shaped changes how we receive it.
Mainstream media does this all the time. Reframing facts to fit a narrative.
Our childhood is filled with examples.
Too often, we get stuck believing that one version of something somehow represents all the versions of something. We resist new shapes, new experiences, even when the core ingredients (or facts) are the same. But sometimes the wisdom, the love, or the joy we’re seeking doesn’t require something brand new—it just requires us to be open to receiving the same essence in a new form.
Flat Meat Philosophy is what happens when we cling to the flatness of an old experience instead of embracing when life takes a new shape.
