📍Yasaka Pagoda, Gion district, Kyoto in full kimono regalia! 着物

Fun times immersing myself in Japanese culture.

If you ever plan a trip to Japan, I recommend renting a kimono and doing a photoshoot.

These are memories you can’t put a price on. Definitely one of the best experiences of my trip.

... Read moreBeyond just the stunning Yasaka Pagoda, I wanted to share a few more practical tips for anyone dreaming of their own Kyoto kimono adventure! When I was looking for a kimono rental in Kyoto, I spent some time researching different shops. My advice? Look for places that offer a good range of sizes and styles, and ideally, include hair styling as part of the package. It truly completes the look! Some shops even have professional photographers on hand, which is fantastic if you want those truly memorable shots without relying on selfies. Don't be shy about comparing prices and what's included – some offer extended rental periods which is great for a full day of exploration. After picking out my favorite kimono – honestly, that's half the fun itself! – and getting styled, I was ready to explore. While the Yasaka Pagoda was definitely a highlight, don't miss wandering through the atmospheric streets of Gion. It’s right there! You'll feel like you've stepped back in time, and the traditional tea houses make for a perfect backdrop. I also highly recommend making your way to Yasaka Shrine (Yasaka-jinja). It's incredibly beautiful, especially at dusk when the lanterns glow, and offers a different, more spiritual backdrop for photos compared to the pagoda. The area around Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka slopes, with their traditional wooden houses and charming shops, also provides endless picturesque opportunities. Imagine yourself strolling down those ancient paths, perhaps even sampling some local sweets, a perfect setting for your kimono experience! A few practical tips I learned: wear comfortable shoes (they provide traditional sandals, but walking can be tiring if you're not used to them!). Also, consider the season. I went during a lovely time, but during summer, you might prefer a lighter yukata, which is also beautiful and more comfortable in the heat. Don't be afraid to ask the staff for recommendations on poses or good photo spots – they're usually super helpful and can even point out lesser-known alleys for unique shots. And most importantly, just soak it all in! It’s not every day you get to walk around historic Kyoto in such beautiful traditional attire. This isn't just about taking pretty pictures; it's about connecting with Japanese culture in a really immersive way. You'll find people are incredibly respectful and often smile or even ask to take a photo with you, which adds to the fun. It was genuinely one of the most enriching parts of my entire trip to Japan, offering a unique perspective on the city's rich history and traditions. You’ll leave with not just incredible photos, but also a deeper appreciation. It’s an experience I truly cherish and encourage everyone visiting Kyoto to try!
