Get to know me! Military Girlfriend Edition
Life as a military girlfriend is truly an experience unlike any other, especially when your partner is in bootcamp. It's a journey filled with immense pride, but also unique challenges and moments of 'strain' that many outside the community might not fully grasp. I've learned so much about resilience and self-reliance during this time, and I wanted to share some insights and coping strategies that have helped me, and hopefully can help other military girlfriends out there. One of the biggest adjustments is the communication. During bootcamp, contact is often minimal, relying on letters and very short phone calls. This period can be incredibly tough, fostering feelings of loneliness or anxiety. My personal strategy has been to focus on what I can control. Instead of constantly checking my phone, I pour my energy into my passions. For me, that means spending time with my beloved pets – like my leopard geckos – or diving into my studies in animal science, pursuing my dream of becoming a veterinary assistant. Having these personal goals and hobbies, whether it's baking, art, or even revisiting sports I used to love like dance or soccer, keeps my mind engaged and reminds me of my own identity, separate from my boyfriend's military journey. Building a strong support system is absolutely crucial. This isn't a journey you have to navigate alone. Connecting with other military girlfriends, whether online or locally, can provide an invaluable sense of community and understanding. They 'get it' in a way others can't, offering advice, a listening ear, or just a shared laugh. We often share tips on how to make the most of those precious phone calls or how to send the most comforting care packages. Another 'strain' comes from the uncertainty. The military lifestyle often means unpredictable schedules, deployments, and moves. Learning to embrace flexibility and develop a strong sense of adaptability becomes second nature. For me, preparing for these possibilities mentally, and even practically by having a 'go-bag' of essentials for unexpected visits or moves, helps reduce some of that anxiety. It's about finding a balance between planning and letting go of what's out of your hands. Finally, remembering to prioritize self-care is non-negotiable. It’s easy to get caught up in worrying or feeling like you need to be strong for two. But taking time for yourself – whether it’s reading a good book, going for a run, or simply enjoying a quiet evening – is vital for your mental and emotional well-being. This journey teaches you a profound strength and a unique bond, and while it comes with its own set of challenges, it also builds an incredible foundation for personal growth and a relationship built on deep trust and understanding. Hang in there, you're stronger than you think!
