HOW TO regrow green onions 🌱
If you’re like me and look for ways to save money, reduce waste, and become less reliant on the grocery store this is a very simple way to have an unlimited green onion supply ✨
The next time you buy some store bought green onions, don’t throw away the scraps! Cut the bulb, stick em in some water, and watch em grow!
You can leave them in the water to keep growing, but these shoots end up being thinner than green onions replanted in soil. To continue my reducing of waste I had my kid paint an old strawberry package and repotted by shoots in there.
As an added benefit to replanting green onions in soil, you can also grow green onion scapes! I was pleasantly surprised to find that scapes were growing in my containers after regrowing them for more than a month.
Try it and let me know what you think

Regrowing green onions is not only a sustainable gardening practice but also a rewarding and educational activity that can involve the whole family. To start, you'll need store-bought green onions. After using the green tops in your cooking, don't discard the bulbs; instead, trim the roots and place them in a small jar filled with water, ensuring the root ends are submerged and the tops remain dry. Position the jar on a sunny windowsill; in just a few days, you’ll notice green shoots sprouting from the bulbs. This method is fantastic for those living in apartments or smaller spaces as it requires minimal equipment. As the shoots grow, be sure to change the water weekly to keep the roots healthy. Once the shoots reach 4-5 inches, you can plant them in soil for optimal growth. Not only will the green onions thrive, but planting them in soil also allows you to cultivate green onion scapes, which can add a fresh flavor to a variety of dishes. This method of regrowing green onions is not only economical but also contributes to reducing food waste. It's clear that with just a little effort, anyone can maintain a continuous supply of this versatile ingredient right at home.
